New LMDE2 install won't boot to desktop after (level 2) updates [SOLVED]

I've repeated this twice:
New install of LMDE 2 Betsy (MATE 64-bit)
(then B43 stuff so wireless card works)
Then upates (selecting top - safest - option)
Then it boots up and cursor is there and works but destop is black.
I think it is a desktop manager problem.

I'm not much good without the desktop but cntrl+alt+F2 gets me a login and trying various things brought up error messages:
eg:
- (mate-control-center:3777): Gtk-ERROR **: GTK+ 2.x symbols detected. Using GTK+ 2.x and GTK+ 3 in the same process is not supported
Trace/breakpoint trap
-mate-panel:6467 GTK warning cannot open display
-matepanel {5108} trap int3 error:0
- GTK warning cannot open display
(it is possible that my attempts to get going caused some of these - but not the initial lack of display)

Yes, this is a known bug, see here: https://github.com/linuxmint/mintupdate/issues/264

You have to install level 3 updates, too, in this case - then it will start after updating (select the middle option when asked for plan).

Thanks that was helpful.
I'm on it now - with a desktop.
I ran dgpk --configure -a then apt-get upgrade, rebooted and got a desktop.
