Kernel Update 4.9 briefly in Update Manager
Today Update Manager offered an extensive list of Level 1 and 2 updates. However, among the offered kernel updates were also updates to Kernel 4.9. After a refresh, I installed the Kernel 3.16 updates, they were gone again. Was this a hiccup or a preview of things to come?

Hello, DanielR.
Please post the screen output of the terminal command (pay attention: the commandline option is hyphen, capital S, lowercase r) This will tell us which Linux Mint release precisely you are using. It will also tell which software repositories you system queries.
Kernel 4.9 has never been supported on Ubuntu based Mint (afaik). Kernel 3.16 reminds me of LMDE 2, though it may have been around for Ubuntu based Mint for a short period of time as well.
Regards.
Karl

Re: Kernel Update 4.9 briefly in Update Manager
Hello Karl,
I am using LMDE2 Mate 64-bit.
Kernel 4.9 update appeared as Level 4 Update in Update Manager along with a very extensive list of Level 1 + 2 updates and a few Level 4 security updates for Kernel 3.16.
BTW, I know that the installed updates will be logged in the apt history.log. However, is there a log of the updates Update Manager proposed for update?

Hello, DanielR.
There is no list of updates which Update Manager suggested for installation.
As you are using LMDE 2, the fact the kernel 4.9 has never been supported on Ubuntu based Mint.
I cannot tell whether on LMDE2 Update Manager was / is supposed to list 4.9 kernels.
Maybe another LMDE 2 user will know and chime in.

Karl

Hello Karl,
Debian Stretch has Kernel 4.9. Might it be possible that there was a hiccup with the Debian repositories and I got offered updates for Stretch instead of Debian Jessie (LMDE2)?

Re: Kernel Update 4.9 briefly in Update Manager
I believe that Debian very recently had a major update to 9.5 perhaps something was put into the wrong repository.

Re: Kernel Update 4.9 briefly in Update Manager
Yes, that coincided with a kernel update from 4.9.0.6 to 4.9.0.7. Sounds likely somebody copied it to the wrong repository. I doubt LMDE2 will ever get a 4-series kernel.
Re: Kernel Update 4.9 briefly in Update Manager
Actually, LMDE2 does have the 4.9 kernel in backport. The OP does have the backport repo in the inxi result post above. Maybe the hiccup comes from that but wherever it came from it has happened to me before. I always install level 4 and 5 separately an only when I am prepared to reboot and 3 or 4 times I saw kernel updates that disappear when the refresh after level 1-3 updates were installed. Don't know why.
Re: Kernel Update 4.9 briefly in Update Manager
Yes, backport is still in the sources list. However, Debian has changed the path to Jessie Backports some time ago and I haven't modified my entry to reflect the change. So I believe, all requests from my system to Backports failed since then. Nevertheless, I have disabled the Backports repository in my sources list just in case.
