I have Mate 1.8.1 installed on both my main host OS Debian 8 Jessie and on my guest OS (virtual box) LMDE 171. The Mate's look completely different. The one on Debian Jessie looks more like Gnome 2 and the Mate in LM looks newer and more modern, I'd like them both be the newer looking one, but not sure what to do as they are the same version.
Ideas??

Re: Mate on LMDE 17.1 vs Debian Jessie
Use the same theme, icons and menu that Mint uses on Jesse. You could add the Betsy repo to do this.
Re: Mate on LMDE 17.1 vs Debian Jessie
You are right, my bad. Thats what I get for trying too many distros at once. lol...
My Host OS is Debian 8 with Mate desktop, guest OS is LMDE 2 with Mate Desktop. Id like my Debian Mate to look like my LMDE2 Mate, Thats what I mean to say. Sorry for the confusion. I was also playing with Linux Mint 17.1 on a different PC and confused the names.
So I can add "Betsy" repo for Mate themes? I'll google it up. Thanks

deb http://extra.linuxmint.com betsy main
this is what I added to my repo. I matched it from my LMDE sources.list.
root@erikpc:/etc/apt# apt-get -t betsy install mate-desktop-environment
Reading package lists... Done
E: The value 'betsy' is invalid for APT::Default-Release as such a release is not available in the sources
What can I do about this?

I'm not sure what you're trying to achieve. If you just want a different panel(s) layout, you can easily do so like I described here.
No need to reinstall MATE from some other repository.

Re: Mate on LMDE 17.1 vs Debian Jessie
What I'm trying to do is make the Mate Desktop on my Debian 8 look like the Mate Desktop on my Linux Mint Debian Edition. I dont know why it looks so different on both systems. The only thing I can think of is that Linux Mint has a custom Mate desktop that does not look at all like Gnome 2, which is how Mate looks on Debian 8.
I will try what you suggested and post back results.
Thank you.
