LMDE2 and mint-y-theme

Post by berturion »

Hello,
LMDE2 has cinnamon 3 but not its new Mint-Y theme. Is this a work-in-progress ? Will it be available in LMDE2 repos ?
For now, I installed it from here : http://packages.linuxmint.com/pool/main/m/mint-y-theme/.
It works. But I don't like to add packages outside repos.

The major components present in Linux Mint 18 (Cinnamon 3.0, MATE 1.14, the XApps etc..) are already in LMDE 2 “Betsy”. Except for a few features (the Mint-Y theme, which requires GTK 3.18, for instance) the other components will be backported shortly.
See the monthly news: http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=3077. LMDE 2 has GTK 3.14 and you may have issues with Mint-Y theme as it was developed for GTK 3.18.

Ok sorry, I didn't see this. So, if I understand, Linux Mint team is working on this, it is a matter of time, right ?
And GTK 3.18 will be available through LMDE2 repos ?

Rephrasing what it says: Linux Mint software developed for Linux Mint 18 would shortly be backported to LMDE 2 — except for a few components. One of those components being Mint-Y theme, which can't be backported reliably because it would need a higher GTK version. LMDE 2 will not get a higher GTK version; that would require a rebuild of the entire operating system (as almost all software on LMDE 2 is built for GTK 3.14 and not GTK 3.18).

For a reliable Mint-Y theme you'd have to hold out till LMDE 3, which will bring a new GTK version. LMDE 3 will be based on Debian 9 for which no release date has been set yet. But likely Debian will want to see a release of Debian 9 somewhere next year.

Now if Mint-Y theme from Linux Mint 18 is working fine for you on LMDE 2, it's fine to keep it as long as if you have any problems with programs or Cinnamon or MATE you remember to first switch back to the default LMDE 2 theme to test if it is caused by you using Mint-Y theme.

You should probably also install http://packages.linuxmint.com/pool/main/m/mint-y-icons/.

I ran Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon side-by-side with LMDE 2 Cinnamon and compared the toolbar of Nemo with window borders, icons, controls, and desktop theme set to Mint-Y-Dark (Mint-Y for icons). See results below (click to enlarge). Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon on top with how the theme is supposed to look and LMDE 2 below with obvious visual differences taking away from the style of the theme.

When you switch to Mint-Y on LMDE 2 MATE you'll receive a warning "This theme won't look as intended because the required GTK+ theme engine 'adwaita' is not installed." So that may the reason the themes look different between Linux Mint 18 and LMDE 2 and it won't be backported.

Ok. I understand. Thank you for these details. Since I created this thread I noticed that scroll bars are invisible with Mint-Y theme on LMDE2.
I give up, I finally applied another theme and will wait LMDE3 for this one.
Thanks :)

Just a question, would it be difficult to modify mint-y-theme in order to be compatible with gtk 3.14 ? If I fork the git project, are there many modifications to do ?

It can probably be done but I wouldn't know where to start. I think the developers are planning to make a mint-y theme for different GTK versions somewhere down the line, but not shortly.

Since the Mint-y theme was modified from Arc theme, you could always install the original. :) https://github.com/horst3180/Arc-theme
It officially supports Gtk 3.14 so you do get scrollbars.

Thanks for this very good alternative. Arc theme is beautiful and is available for jessie through a specific repo which is a very clean solution for LMDE2.

Arc theme definitively adopted !

That's true, but I use a green icon set which helps a little. :)

Since you want mint green after installing arc-theme. You can do it by using dconf-editor. See viewtopic.php?t=131722
