Dropbox stopped working

I have an issue with Dropbox on my main PC. The auto-upgrade had been hanging for days, so I tried to manually upgrade to the latest version (10.4.26) following the instructions on the Dropbox site. But now Dropbox won't start properly.

Rather, I'm stuck at the "downloading daemon" dialog which keeps reappearing again and again. I never get the tray icon, and here's the output of the command line:

The Dropbox daemon is not installed!
Run "dropbox start -i" to install the daemon
But then, even this command fails eventually.

I badly need to restore a working Dropbox! TIA for any advice.

Well, that's just what I needed, thanks!

I was able to recover partially by downloading what they call the offline installer from here. But I chose the old version, the one I that was working before (8.4.21).

It does give me a working Dropbox, but I'm also back to the unending "Dropbox upgrading..." message.

They say beta build 11.3.18 solves the issue. I assume the stable version 11.4.20 does, too. But this PC still wants to upgrade to 10.4.26, which fails (I have a file ~/Dropbox/.dropbox.cache/dropbox-upgrade-10.4.26.tar.gz which never gets unpacked).

So I plan, either to just wait for the latest version to be pushed automatically, or to do the upgrade manually some time later with the offline installer.
