VirtualBox: Background image garbled up after last update

Postby UliBär » Sat Nov 19, 2016 10:36 am

Hi there,

after the last updates for LMDE 2 i got a garbled background image in a VirtualBox installation on Win 7 and Win 8.1 hosts, using VirtualBox 5.0.26. Until the last update everything was working fine. I first realized this on the Win 7 host, but after update of LMDE 2 on the Win 8.1 host, the same thing happened there. The image looks, as if it is reduced to 16 color palette or something like that. Everything else runs as usual.

Current is vb 5.0.28. Do an update and don't forget to update the guest additions in the VMs afterwards.

Why should an upgrade of VirtualBox fix that? Before the LMDE 2 update everything was fine. When i shut down the session of LMDE 2 inside VirtualBox, the image looks ok again for half a second, just before the system goes down. Will try that on Monday, but i'm dead sure, it won't help in any way.

This is a bug fix release. I cannot judge, if this helps, as I do not have a Windows host. But bug fix releases do exist for just that.

So i upgraded to VirtualBox 5.0.28 including the guest additions. Result: The same fault as before... :(

As i mentioned, the bug was introduced by an LMDE 2 update, not by VirtualBox.

And now i have to validate this new and untested version of VirtualBox against all other virtual installations or downgrade again to 5.0.26... :x

This is the way it looks:

Create a fresh new user account. Does it appear the same?

I must quit here, because I use the main edition of Mint and do not know, if and which updates for LMDE might cause the problem. (Wild guess: Cinnamon 3.2?)

Hi there,

the latest updates, i just installed via update manager, fixed this issue!
So everything is fine again.

Ok, i seem to be the only one... :?

Now for the interesting part: If i choose another picture for background, it works fine, even after some reboots. But if i choose again the standard picture, it works, but does not survive a reboot. Since this happens the same on two different machines, i cannot believe, i am the only one with this problem. My workaround is for now, using another background picture, but i would prefer the standard picture...

I have the exact same issue going on, but mine is a couple day old fresh install of LMDE 2 in VB 5.1.10. I also have noticed that it's only occurring on that particular background and not on any of the others. If I reload the background it's fine (until the next reboot).

Meanwhile i found out, that also other background images from the "retro"-folder are affected by this bug. Maybe, it depends on the format of the image file? Directly after the change, the background looks normal, but after a reboot, the background is "washed out" and is much brighter, sometimes to be nearly completely white.

Since yesterdays updates it works again, so it was definitely broken, cause i didn't change a thing in VirtualBox.
Also i had to download the background picture again separately, cause the updates decided to deliberately delete the older background images, although they were in use. I only knew this kind of behavior from a Seattle-based company - until now...
