Chrome 56+

On several of my LMDE machines, installing Chrome 56 (or greater) renders all Google domains unusable ("Your connection is not private- Attackers might be trying to steal your information from http://www.google.ca (for example, passwords, messages, or credit cards). NET::ERR_CERT_WEAK_SIGNATURE_ALGORITHM") but it seems to work just fine on Windows laptop.

Anyone else seeing the problem on LMDE & Chrome 56+ or is it something particular to my setup?

I know for sure Chrome 55 worked fine and that the current upgrade stops it from working. This seems related to removal of support for SHA-1 certificates (https://threatpost.com/google-removing- ... 56/122041/). Chromium seems to work it it's an ancient version (31) in the LMDE repositories, so I'd rather not use it. Firefox seems to work fine too.

For what it's worth, because I don't have LMDE: I don't have that problem with Chrome 56.0.2924.87 on Linux Mint 18.1.

I am on LMDE but using Chromium 56 instead of Chrome and I'm not getting this issue. See if you are still encountering this problem if you bring 56 back to a point where it thinks it is the first time running Chrome. I'm not sure if Chrome is in the same place but in Chromium it would be in a hidden folder in your home ~/.config/chromium . Either rename chromium (or in your case chrome in a similar folder, maybe ~/.chrome) or move it someplace else like your desktop. If that rectifies the issue you can start putting things back piece by piece until you find the file that is causing it unless you don't mind losing bookmarks other forms of history.

Another thing you can try is creating a new user on LMDE under "Users and Groups" to test Chrome there. If the above doesn't work but the new user does you would have a different type of problem.

If the issue was Chrome and not something about your install I would have expected to hear others with the same issue.

Something's wrong with that. The latest version available should be 56.0.2924.76-1~deb8u1.

You have most likely this error message because you are not using the HTTPS version of the website. Try to connect using https://www.google.ca
I also advise you to install the https_everywhere addon from the EFF. It is available for Chrome as well as Firefox. It forces the https version for a lot of website and helps you to protect your connexion and data.

HI, I have the same problem: I'm not able to navigate through google services while I can connect to this forum (which is https) without problem. In the certificates area I found all certificates not valid (while they were good before update to 56) and I am not able to delete them because the button is grayed. I suppose that once I remove them, they will be renewed automatically once I connect to google services again.

Any suggestions?

Hi, I have the same problem using any browser (Vivaldi or Chrome) with Chromium 56+. (No problem with firefox).

I'm on Linux Mint 17.3 xfce.

This is happening only on google sites (google,youtube,gmail, translate etc).

The problem is still there even when using https.

Please, any ideas ?

Ok, I found the solution at least in my case.

I was not performing Level 3 updates up until now.
When I made the Level 3 updates everything returned to normal.
