OpenCPN on LMDE 2: How to install?

Postby ulli_m16 » Tue Feb 14, 2017 5:08 am

Folks, I need some advice how to get OpenCPN on my freshly setup netbook with Mint LMDE 2 up and running. When searching in Synaptic OpenCPN is shown but not offered for installation.

In a sailors forum ( OpenCPN is an routing and navigational application for boating ) the hint was given that the Ubuntu version would be "trusty" and the following source should be added:
http://ppa.launchpad.net/opencpn/opencpn/ubuntu trusty main
I do not want to act on this advice alone. There should be a backport?

Aren`t there no sailors around here?

Greetings from sunny Switzerland
Ulrich

In addition: just got back to Synaptic and conducted the search again.
What is shown as the result of the search ist just the name of the application in the window on the left. No packages are shown in the respective window at all.

ppa should normally not be used in LMDE. LMDE is based on Debian and doesn't support ppa. This being said, this website says that this ppa should be compatible.
So you can try. I would start by trying the process in a virtual machine. So that you don't break your main system.
Otherwise, you can try to compile the sources.

If it ain't broke, fix it until it is.
