I observed some crashes in mate-terminal, and they are not consistent. Until I can tell what triggers the problem, I'll blame bad luck on it.
The crashes usually occur when I select text in the terminal screen, then right-click into the terminal right away to copy such text. It seems to depend on some combination of mouse events.
This is what I got from /var/log/messages:
