Synaptics isn't for updates. Try the Updater.
If your issue is solved, kindly indicate that by editing the
first post in the topic, and adding [SOLVED] to the title. Thanks!

I use synaptic for updates and never use the updater.
I use a non-crippled Ubuntu version which allows you to "mark all updates", but the Mint version, which I just ran, shows the updates; it just won't let you mark them for update.

how so , homie ?
gksudo synaptic
Hit "Reload" (which means "Update")
Status -> Click "Upgradable" if it's there. Shows the packages which can upgraded.
Rt-click "Mark all for upgrade" (or just mark some of them). "Apply". Then they're all upgraded.
But like I said, this is the not-crippled Ubuntu version of synaptic. The Mint version shows packages which can be upgraded, but for some perverse reason it won't allow you to mark them for upgrade.
I use synaptic because I have some packages "Pinned" (which means "Don't upgrade") and "apt" ignores that list tries to upgrade them. I've never used the "upgrade manager" or whatever it's called.

It's up to you, but keep in mind that there is a risk involved in uninstalling default applications. There may be dependencies.

C++, you uninstalled what? The Update Manager or Synaptic Package Manager?
Does the Linux Mint Update Manager not use Synaptic package manager in the background when actually installing the selected packages?

You'll probably get better help, if you answer questions, that people ask you to be able to help you better.
If your issue is solved, kindly indicate that by editing the
first post in the topic, and adding [SOLVED] to the title. Thanks!

Hey Flemur, how and where did you find the uncrippled synapatic gui app. I want this in the worst way. The cool looking software manager has shite search capability and has quite frankly, too much flash and too little bang. TIA.

If you want to use Synaptic instead of the software manager, you can just go ahead and do that, you don't need a special version. You only need that if you want to use it instead of the update manager.

I just copied the executable from a ubuntu 16.04 (or 16.1?) install...but the one from ubuntu 17.1 claims it needs some libraries and I haven't fiddled with it. (Mint 18.3)

I don't even have it any more because I removed the "flatpak" virus. So now I upgrade with a terminal.

This uncrippled one seems to run with Mint 18.3: (download the .deb file)
