Skype not supported on LMDE 2 ? [CLOSED]

Post by ron_h »

LMDE 2 Cinnamon 64bit

I posted in the Microsoft Community on a STARTUP_LOAD_ERROR I am having with the current version of Skype. The response is
It looks like you're using a Skype version we don't fully support yet. The only supported versions are listed below:
64-bit Ubuntu 14.04+
64-bit Debian 8.0+
64-bit OpenSUSE 13.3+
64-bit Fedora Linux 24+
What version of Debian is LMDE 2 based on ?

LMDE2 is based on Debian Jessie. Nevermind, Skype should work.

What Skype version did you install ?

As best I can find Jessie is 8.0 (or higher)
| update so as best I can see the assertion that Skype is not supported on LMDE2 is incorrect

Skype version 8.11.0.4
Calling version 2017.23.01.38

I use Skype For Linux Beta on my LMDE2 without any problems.
Just download DEB file from:

I did that a while back. What you get now is not Skype for Linux Beta, but instead Skype for Linux. I didn't have the issue with Skype for Linux Beta.

Well, I don't know what's going wrong.

I'm using 8.11.0.4 with Debian Stretch without problems.

Maybe you could give a try with Ghetto Skype then:

not sure if the Polish version is what ron_h is looking for, though.
:o

Skype for Linux beta 5.3 was released on May 31, 2017. It is a proprietary software, built on the web-based Skype client.
you can install Skype on Debian 9 Stretch from the official Skype Linux client repository.
- note that Skype for Linux beta currently only works on 64-bit system. . .
https://www.linuxbabe.com/debian/instal ... -9-stretch
previously Skype for Linux, was not a supported product.

The Skype version I have installed was downloaded direct from the Skype site, and is the current version.

The problem is, every time my PC (and Skype) starts, I get a START_UP_LOAD_ERROR and have to sign out of Skype, then sign in again. It appears that some people on Ubuntu have the exact same problem. And so do some people on macos Sierra 10.12.6.

I'll mark this thread closed as it's not an LMDE2 specific issue.

I guess you've enabled the automatic start... Yes, it seems to be a skype specific issue

White screen of failure

Post by MX-5 »

I was happy with Skype through LinuxBeta. I like that it-- what's the word... worked! Then MS decided to break Skype for us. My feedback to MS "Skype Team" was simple: You have provided a worthless "upgrade" for Linux users. When I try logging into Skype from Linux Mint 18.2 I get the eternal white wall screen of nothingness. Give me back the Linux Skpye Beta. It worked. None of the tips, help, workarounds, or suggestions I have found on here or anywhere else have alleviated this problem. Yet another reminder of why I left Windows 10 for the beauty, reliability, and functionality of Linux Mint! :D

I converse with folks on LMDE 2 Mate and Skype 8.10.0.4.

Look for the Linux section. Although, some of the solutions say, "Get the latest version of Skype", and if you are already running 8.10.0.4....
FAQ and known issues with the new Skype

It is unfortunate that they don't identify the version on their download page.

You could try removing the $HOME/.config/skypeforlinux directory (backup first).
