Please provide Thunderbird 52.9.1 Update

Post by Hansl »

It's out since 20 days now and I do need its fix for a bug that bugs me.
Plus its „Various security fixes“.

Thanks, Hans

I have it in Mint 17.3 Cinnamon. What are you using?

On my Mint 19 system..

Code: Select all

$ dpkg-query -W thunderbird
thunderbird	1:52.9.1+build3-0ubuntu0.18.04.1
I don't use it, so I didn't pay it any attention.

Well, this is the LMDE2 forum…  using LMDE2 Mate.

Code: Select all

$ apt policy thunderbird
thunderbird:
  Installed: 52.9.0~linuxmint1+betsy
  Candidate: 52.9.0~linuxmint1+betsy
  Version table:
     1:52.9.1-1~deb8u1 0
        500 http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates/main amd64 Packages
     1:52.8.0-1~deb8u1 0
        500 http://debian.netcologne.de/debian/ jessie/main amd64 Packages
 *** 52.9.0~linuxmint1+betsy 0
        700 http://mirror.netcologne.de/linuxmint/packages/ betsy/upstream amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
Looks ever more as if LMDE is being left behind — even security updates delayed for weeks.

Didn't even notice! I only view the "New Posts", never really paying attention to the forum name.

I think they're busy playing with the LMDE3 beta.

You could just upgrade to the debian version directly, nothing to be gained from the Mint-branded version, anyway.

I don't know the fix, but I do see the problem:

That was clear:  the Mint team set a higher priority on its own packages (branding, sponsoring) which is alright so far.
The proper fix is also obvious:  Mint should then provide the current version, hence my request.

Some workarounds come to mind, but they are not the proper fix and require manual tinkering (on half a dozen machines in my case), always with some risk of unintended later consequences:
• forcing apt-get to use jessie/updates/main for Thunderbird
• lowering Mint's priority
• switching TB from Default to Release update channel

You are right, of course, but with one exception the developers do not come here to discuss, so all we can do is offer you workarounds or tell you to just wait it out.
You can try to contact the developers on their IRC I believe.

The person who needs to know has been notified.
When I give opinions, they are my own. Not necessarily those of any other Linux Mint developer or the Linux Mint project as a whole.

Thank you!
I understand most work is going into LMDE3 right now (and I'm eagerly awaiting that).
But this also affects security updates for all normal LMDE2 installations…

I have just received the Thunderbird 52.9.1 Update (Level 1 security update) from the Debian Security repository through Update Manager. I'm on LMDE2 Mate 64-bit.

Yes, it's just arrived.  The simple way, by retiring TB from the Mint repos, thus freeing the Debian repos.
A little problem is that the binary has now moved:  from /opt/thunderbird/thunderbird to /usr/bin/thunderbird → /usr/lib/thunderbird/thunderbird.  So user–modified scripts and links may need to be changed, too.
