@atarax: I noticed, you posted the solution on launchpad. Thanks. Would you please add that the command with pluma is for Mate users, and in Cinnamon you must type gedit instead of pluma?

@giepen.m: I saw, earlier in this thread you created a file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/, as proposed in the Arch wiki. Then atarax mentioned, in LMDE 2 the X-configuration is in another directory; you must put that file in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/. Did you remember that, when you tried switching to sna? Sorry, just want to make sure, there is no misunderstanding.

I had changed the directory already to /usr/share/...

The bug still occurs. New is that some (not all) jpg are black or corrupted - here a screenshot of a fullscreen jpg

Back to "uxa"...

@giepen.m: unfortunately I have no other idea except for software rendering. Did you try that? Select Cinnamon (Software Rendering) at login screen. The downside is, everything becomes slower, depending on your processor. So it may not be very satisfying.
Other than that you may wait, until the Debian package xserver-xorg-video-intel 2.99 from experimental gets fixed and arrives in Testing. Then you may try that one. Best wishes!

Tried software rendering now - far too slow to be useful...

Some more detail about my hardware:
i3-370M Processor - Arrandale (Westmere) microarchitecture (1st generation).

Sandy Bridge is the 2nd generation of i-core processors. As "sna" means Sandybridge's New Acceleration this should be part of my issue.

Still wonder why this issue affects so few - the intel HD graphics is / was quite common, and a machine from late 2010 is not that! old neither. Still runs faster than any Windows machine I've ever seen and will ever see...

@ giepen.m

The enabling sna fix did not work for you?

Not at all. Tried sna many times now. Also with

Code: Select all

Option "TearFree" "true"
Option "AccelMethod" "sna"
Same bug as always + Jpeg bug (screenshot)

"uxa" still works best.

I also face this issue having a Westmere generation CPU (Pre sna)

It was working fine in linux mint 17

Well it appears we've come to a dead end here.

Is it the last solution now to wait for the new "xserver-xorg-video-intel" package (2:2.99.917-1~exp1) to come from experimental -> sid -> stretch (testing)? This could take ages, right?

It is the intel driver that fails, but only in LMDE, not in Debian - is that right?
Or how does is go on now?

I really don't want to leave LMDE, but I think I change to Debian than: the bug there does not exist, right?
Too much interruption of workflow having to change themes every two minutes - the system is unusable the way it is...

You could contact the maintainers of this package directly, describe your problem and ask if there is a temporary workaround for it. Maybe they will cooperate. You find more details about this package here:
https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/xserver-xorg-video-intel

This morning my NVidea GT 220 was making a lot of noise... Seems the fan is going out and it was really hot! Now I am back on the on-board Intel graphics and LMDE 2 was having problems again because of it... I still have not found any answers to this problem. For the time being I am on another hard drive with a different OS. I either have to figure out the problem or try and change the fan on the NVidea card.

I have another GT 220 that is bad but does have a working fan. I might try taking it apart this weekend and see if I can fix it. At least I can still plug in the drive with LMDE 2 if I can find anything else to try. I have no idea where I put the other graphics card and am hoping my wife did not throw it out. Anyway, I am still looking for an answer to the problem with Intel graphics.

Question: Is everyone with this problem on a "Pre-Sandybrige" CPU? (Should be Westmere and Nahalem)

I have seen those older architectures being mentioned earlier, maybe that's what we have in common

Intel Atom N270. Don't know, if it's 'pre-Sandybridge'.

As an indicator: sandybridge was released January 2011...; as far as I know only "Core i" processors (i3, i5, i7...)
So Atom 270 and G33 both way before sandy...

Changing to MATE a few days ago has resolved my problem. I have opened 25+ programs at a time including VirtualBox (Windows 7 with Office running) + 2 HD Videos... - could not reproduce bug.

I stick to MATE and will be attentive for Cinnamon and xorg-intel... updates - appears as if both packages are involved here and not only xorg-intel..?!

One more confirmation to all from my side ...

1. This issue affects pre-sna graphics cards and sna graphics cards as well. I have a laptop with 2nd gen i-5 (with sna) and a core 2 duo old desktop (without sna). It affects both.
2. This issue is not related to Cinnamon. I've installed 32-bit 'mate' on both and I've faced this issue on both the systems.
3. I've uninstalled firefox, removed mate-menu from the panel. Now the issue is almost resolved for me on my sna-laptop. Some how I am not able to reproduce the issue now on my sna-laptop. I've to check still. I've not applied any level-5 upgrades. I can not confirm this for my pre-sna old desktop.
4. For others, who are still facing the problem, there is a good news. There is a new xserver-xorg-video-intel (2:2.99.917-1~bpo8+1) package in jessie-backports. Thay can install and try. I am going to try this for the pre-sna desktop. I will post the results.
