[SOLVED]black stripes LMDE2 INTEL 915GM/GMS/910GML

Post by Niks »

Fred Barclay has made this tutorial for us mortals which solved my problem.
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 1&t=203167

Testing out LMDE 2 and found a problem with graphics.

I get black stripes across the background. Everything else seems to work normally.
If I change the background pic ( ie refresh to the original ) it's fixed.
Have had the same blocks in the browser once but if I re-size it's also solved

This problem has already been reported. You should check the forum for a solution.

Please note that this has been added in the road map by the team:
Add va-driver-all to the list of installed packages (fixes black bands with Intel GPUs)

Does that correct the red rectangle that is drawn in Docky as well? That would be amazing fix! Then I'm just waiting that they do something with wine to switch again 8)

Add va-driver-all to the list of installed packages (fixes black bands with Intel GPUs)
Didn't fix it.

I looked on the forum before i made his post but could not find anything that address the issue yet..
Can some one post a ink if you know ?

Didn't try to disable splash screen yet as I don't know how to re-enable it if it's not the problem but I fail to see why that would solve a driver problem anyway ?
More info would be nice.

Thx for feedback mintys

Disabling splash screen in grub has no effect.
As does reinstalling Plymouth.
I guess this is a new problem ?

Re: Graphics issue on LMDE2 INTEL GPU [NOT SOLVED]

Post by Niks »

Ok I after hours of trying to find out anything about this GPU and any driver issues I found this command

Code: Select all

inxi -AGx
which produced this info
Graphics: Card: Intel Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller
bus-ID: 00:02.0
Display Server: X.Org 1.16.4 drivers: intel (unloaded: fbdev, vesa)
Resolution: 1280x800@59.97hz
GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel 915GM x86/MMX/SSE2
GLX Version: 2.1 Mesa 10.3.2 Direct Rendering: Yes
intel (unloaded: fbdev,vesa)

Errrrrr interesting :?:

I also updated cinnamon from 2.4 to 2.6 which has no change of effect.

I also have discovered dragging the windows to the to the desktop and forcing them to go full screen width will restore the window removing the blocks. :D

I just want to say that I also experience the same problem on my Dell Latitude D510. As I do

Code: Select all

inxi -AGx
I get:
Graphics: Card: Intel Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller
bus-ID: 00:02.0
Display Server: X.Org 1.16.4 drivers: intel (unloaded: fbdev, vesa)
Resolution: 1024x768@60.00hz
GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel 915GM x86/MMX/SSE2
GLX Version: 2.1 Mesa 10.3.2 Direct Rendering: Yes
I did a clean install of LMDE 2 with Cinammon (32bit) from the official iso image. I also installed the package "va-driver-all".

The problem started on the same day I upgraded from LMDE 1 to LMDE 2. I thought something went wrong in the upgrade process, so I downloaded the ISO and did a clean install, but the problem still continues. It occurs from time to time and I cannot determine what triggers it. I hope someone can solve it before long. It make it difficult to work.

Still have not found any new info .... :(
I have the idea it maybe a cinnamon issue since I have another laptop with an Intel GPU and that keeps crashing.

Would love it if someone reacted to this problem even if it's just a suggestion of a bug report to someone some where !

AN UPDATE of mint and cinnamon :D :D :D :D :D :D

NO CHANGE

When the problem happened again this evening, I opened the System Monitor and killed the process "Cinnamon". The screen went black/blank for a moment and Cinnamon re-started automatically and cleared the problem. This seems to suggest that the problem is caused indeed by Cinnamon.

I have a similar (the same?) problem here in that parts of my display randomly turn black and some screen elements (such as the reload symbol in the Firefox URL bar) disappear.

inxi gives me the following output:

Code: Select all

Graphics: Card: Intel 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device bus-ID: 00:02.0
Display Server: X.Org 1.16.4 drivers: intel (unloaded: fbdev, vesa)
           Resolution: 1280x1024@75.02hz
GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel 852GM/855GM x86/MMX/SSE2
GLX Version: 1.3 Mesa 10.3.2 Direct Rendering: Yes

I found that it is particularly likely to happen when I visit a popular German news web site http://www.tagesschau.de (see screenshot), but the distortions are not limited to Firefox. Part of Mint Menu goes black as well, for instance.

I heard this is likely an issue with the Intel graphics chipset, but I have never had this problem with LMDE1, so it must have been broken somewhere along the way?

What do I have to do to fix it? Someone said he compiled a new kernel, but I would not even know where to start...

I'm seeing update after update but nothing changes my problem.
This is how my screen looks.
I have Chromium / firefox and image viewer open.
As you can see it also effects the back ground and icons.

I could not wait any longer for a fix that may or may not come. So, I installed Linux Mint 17.2 “Rafaela”. Sad, because I would have liked to stay with LMDE2. I used LMDE(1) just over a year and had no problem. It is a shame that LMDE2 should have such a basic/fundamental flaw. I hope someone will fix the issue for those who are still waiting patiently.

@ Megumi

installing the Liquorix kernel did the trick for me. No more problems in either Cinnamon or MATE.
http://liquorix.net/

instructions :

sudo su
echo -e 'deb http://liquorix.net/debian sid main\ndeb-src http://liquorix.net/debian sid main' >> /etc/apt/sources.list.d/liquorix.list

exit
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install liquorix-keyring
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get #whatever liquorix kernel and headers you want

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

@FrozenYogurt
Thank you for your response with a very helpful info/advice from your successful experience. Had I known this yesterday, I would have tried it. Alas, I've already spent hours wiping the hard drive, installing LM 17.2, setting it up and restoring my home folder on it. I don't fancy spending the same time to reverse the process, though I would be very interested to try your remedy. I hope others can try and benefit from it.

I have it on good authority that a potential fix will be coming out tomorrow. Until then, the (almost) best fix I've found is to install Liquorix.
(I say "almost" because I'm testing the other fix right now--no problems after setting it up and installing va-driver-all. But I'm not positive that it's the cure yet. Wait and see!)

UPDATE: The potential fix, wasn't. At least for me. :(
Liquorix kernel is still the best option for me.

I have noticed on one laptop that chromium crashes Cinnamon but don't think this is related.

Tried to install liquorix but have had no luck either finding the info i need to find the correct version / headers etc.
So as yet not got it to work ....some more help would be nice

Still think its a shame there seems to be a lack of feedback from the Cinnamon ( yes I made an official bug report ) / LMDE2 camp regarding the issues we are having.
I remember Linus Torvalds having "not nice words" to say about Nvidia and their luck of support for their chip sets back in 2012
I was one of the sufferers at the time and had to replace a Graphics card to an ATI to solve the problem..
Many laptops use Intel chips sets which can not be changed.....so im stuck with these issues or change distro. Can't even downgrade to LMDE1 ( which never had these issues ) because its reaching it's end soon.

I'm more then willing to provide info, run tests and support the Mint / cinnamon team an way I can. You all do wonderful things and intend to fight this one out.
Even with Windows 10 for free in the air I'm still able to make LMDE converts but this one is a real show stopper :(

More feedback folks PLEASE :D
