[Possibly Fixed?] Frequent Cinnamon Screen Corruption

Post by darethehair » Mon Jun 01, 2015 4:39 pm

[I don't think anyone has mentioned this yet?]

My LMDE2 Cinnamon desktop is becoming 'corrupted' fairly often, and it is annoying. It manifests in the following ways:

- sudden loss of identifying text labels on the bottom 'apps' panel (leaving just icons on a black bar)
- switching to running apps results in an 'invisible' screen appearance (my background shows nicely but no app)

I am forced to do a Cinnamon restart via ALT+F2+r.

The output of 'inxi -G' for me is this:

Code: Select all

Graphics: Card: Intel 4 Series Integrated Graphics Controller
Display Server: X.Org 1.16.4 drivers: intel (unloaded: fbdev, vesa) Resolution: 1920x1200@59.95hz
GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel G45/G43 GLX Version: 2.1 Mesa 10.3.2
None of this occurred on LMDE1, BTW.

Thanks for any help!

There's a couple of threads about Intel-related issues here:
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 9&t=194748
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 9&t=196272

Doesn't seem like the issues have been solved, but maybe some posts there will be helpful.

Thanks for the links to similar posts! As for myself, I am currently trying out a much newer kernel (4.1.0-040100rc4-generic). So far, I have had to restart Cinnamon once (sigh!) but we will see...

I have had this problem too, but running lmde2 mate. I haven't checked the other posts, but upgrading my kernel to 3.18.14 seems to have fixed it.

Code: Select all

Graphics: Card: Intel Mobile 945GSE Express Integrated Graphics Controller
Display Server: X.Org 1.16.4 drivers: intel (unloaded: fbdev, vesa)
           Resolution: 1024x600@60.00hz
GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel 945GME x86/MMX/SSE2
           GLX Version: 2.1 Mesa 10.3.2

Code: Select all

uname -a
Linux minihal 3.18.14 #1 Mon Jun 1 22:17:32 PDT 2015 i686 GNU/Linux
i grabbed 3.18.14 (from kernel.org) because it was the most recent long term kernel. i haven't had the problem in two days.

I continue to have the loss of icon text in the bottom bar and menus, but (for what it's worth) I haven't had any more screen lockups since I starting using the newer kernel. Hmmm...

I'll be darned, I never even noticed that the open window icons were missing from my panel/bar.

I guess I'm so dependent on alt-tab for switching windows that I didn't see it. :?

Code: Select all

mate-panel --reset
I'm running mate, and the above code gave me back my open window icons in the bottom panel/bar. there must be a similar code for cinnamon, maybe "cinnamon-panel --reset"?

Could be worth a shot.

There is an equivalent for Cinnamon, but it is easier for me to remember 'ALT+F2+r' to reset the screen. Also, despite the newer kernel, I still get corruption and ultimately a complete freeze :(

I fully predict after posting this supposedly 'good news' that Murphy's Law will kick in and I will find that it was all an illusion, but...

For the last day or so I have had no desktop screen corruption or lockups. I have no idea why not, but I'll tell you what I think changed during that time:

- Installed a much more recent kernel (4.1.0-040100rc4-generic). At first, this made no difference at all, so I think that it is unlikely to be the reason why things are better now.

- Black listed some annoying messages in my system log -- specifically 'blacklist evbug' -- but I can see no reason why such a thing would help

- let some automatic updates go through for LMDE2 -- which I assume that rest of you have done as well:

Code: Select all
