AMD drivers installation

Post by ifnotforyou »

Hi,
for some reason I'd like to install AMD drivers.

My OS is LMDE 2 MATE:

inxi -G
Graphics: Card: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Juniper PRO [Radeon HD 5750]
Display Server: X.Org 1.16.4 drivers: ati,radeon (unloaded: fbdev,vesa)
Resolution: 1920x1200@59.95hz
GLX Renderer: Gallium 0.4 on AMD JUNIPER
GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 10.3.2

inxi
CPU~Quad core Intel Core i7 860 (-HT-MCP-) clocked at Min:1197.000Mhz Max:2794.000Mhz Kernel~3.16.0-4-amd64 x86_64 Up~58 min Mem~1100.0/7995.1MB HDD~3628.7GB(83.0% used) Procs~207 Client~Shell inxi~2.1.28

I've found link to these instructions on this very forum:
http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions ... n-8-jessie

Would this be fine for my system (and kernel version) or is something else recommended.

Thank you!

The driver has to be supported for the Mint version you are using, otherwise you will not be able to boot and get to the desktoo.
For Mint 18 there are no AMD drivers available. For Mint 17.x fglrx.
You can try drivers visible in your driver manager.
I wasnt successful with any downloaded drivers. Oncevyou install unsupoorted drivers, it is difficult to remove too.
If I have helped you solve a problem, please add [SOLVED] to your first post title, it helps other users looking for help.
Regards,
Deepak

G'day ifnotforyou! :)
Actually, there are AMD drivers available for Jessie (and therefore LMDE 2), depending on how old your video card is. AMD doesn't support their Linux video drivers very long, so if your card is more than a few years old there probably isn't an available, safe driver. If on the other hand you have a pretty new machine, then there are probably AMD drivers available.

They're not simple to install, though, and you do run the risk of breaking your system (video driver breakages are among the most difficult to recover from, 'cause if something goes terribly wrong you can't even see the screen.) ;) So if you want to proceed, please back up your system first!

Can you run inxi -Fxz and post the output here?

My GPU is quite old, I'm afraid.
I thought the GPU drivers could be cause for my freezing problems in some distros, unfortunately LMDE2 included. (But not Mint 16 - IDK which drivers I was using there and I have already deleted that system! :/ - or in Win). I almost turned every other stone so driver could be worth a try and I'm not afraid to break anything anymore, since ATM it's already broken. If it won't work, I'll just move on to Mint 17.1.

There is a driver available, but there might be a bit of a problem...
One driver version is available for Debian 8 "Jessie":

AMD Catalyst 14.9 (supported devices)
For Radeon R9 200 series, Radeon R7 200 series, Radeon HD 8000, Radeon HD 7000, Radeon HD 6000 and Radeon HD 5000 GPUs.
https://wiki.debian.org/ATIProprietary

Can you review the link above and make sure that's the case? If so, you can install it like this:

Code: Select all

aptitude -r install linux-headers-$(uname -r|sed 's,[^-]*-[^-]*-,,') fglrx-driver

Create a Xorg configuration file: https://wiki.debian.org/ATIProprietary#configure
Then reboot.

Now for the potential problem. This driver is reported to be incompatible with the Gnome desktop. Since you're on MATE it might work or it might not (if you were on Cinnamon I suspect it would not work) so I did want to make you aware of that before you try it.

Make sure to read that link completely first before you install! This is the Barclay-abbreviated version :) so there's still lots of good info you need to check out first.

Cheers!
Fred
