[Solved] The absolute lack of sound

Post by JackStarborn »

Hi all nice and warm (already December - time waits for no one).

I'm not a native English speaker, I apologize in advance for grammatical errors and poor vocabulary.

I use a different distribution of Linux for 3 years. Mainly openSUSE, fedora, once I even tried Arch (with GUI installer).
But still I consider myself a beginner.

A few days ago I decided to give a chance to Mint based on Debian.
I do not know the systems derived from Debian.

I've never had problems with sound in other distros.
I read few audio related topics but nothing helped (my poor linux skills :|).
So I do not know where to start.

What info should I provide you? Which commands run?

My pc details:
Mainboard: MSI Z170-A PRO with Realtek ALC-892
GPU: AMD HD 7850 pitcairn with audio capabilities

When I run pavuControl and play youtube film I see yellow bars indicating the strength of audio playback but no sound comes out of the speakers.

Best Regards.

The kernel in LMDE is already quite old. It's the 3.19 kernel.
Maybe you could look into the backports and install a newer version to test if it solves your problems?
Or maybe your computer is not that recent?

Hi killer de bug,
thanks for reply.
Or maybe your computer is not that recent?
Posting information about motherboard I assumed that Z-170 chipset is better known.
It was built for Intel Skylake CPU which debuted on August 5, 2015 (wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skylake_( ... hitecture)).

I found something like this
https://forums.bunsenlabs.org/viewtopic.php?id=1160

I'll try. I'll let you know what will come of this.

You can check out if your sound device is supported by PCI ID, http://cateee.net/lkddb/web-lkddb/SND_HDA_INTEL.html

For such new architecture, a new kernel may help.

Agreed. I got an H170 myself about a year ago when it was real new. I was pleasantly surprised the latest kernel [then] had all the support for it.

For such new architecture, a new kernel may help.
Radeon 7850 is not that new and is capable to play sound, but it doesn't work either.

I have problem with the installation of a new kernel.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
linux-image-amd64-4.7.0-0.bpo.1: Requires: linux-base (> = 4.3 ~) but 3.5 is to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, stopped damaged packages.
Maybe I'm doing something wrong.
Does anyone would be kind to paste commands installing a new kernel?

EDIT:
I also found this topic https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic ... LAuEwc_zKw with patches to old kernels, but don't know how to apply it.

I would do it like this:

Code: Select all

apt install linux-image-amd64/jessie-backports linux-image-4.7.0-0.bpo.1-amd64/jessie-backports linux-base/jessie-backports

I see, command i used

Code: Select all

apt install linux-image-4.7.0-0.bpo.1-amd64/jessie-backports
was incomplete.

Thanks man. Youtube, VLC are now playing sound. :-)
You are my personal hero.

Are future updates prepared by the Mint developers will not cause a conflict with my new kernel?

I'm so happy to hear that your sound is back. That's really cool!
Upgrades prepared by the team will not impact the kernel. The kernel may but updated when LMDE 3 will be out next year. It will be the same kernel than Debian 9. But you are not obliged to install it.

I have still the old 3.16 kernel.

Code: Select all

Kernel: 3.16.0-4-amd64 x86_64 (64 bit)
