external drive spawns too many file managers

Post by linuxgrrl »

hi,
my external USB drive has not been connected in a while. I used it to back up files.

When i connect it, the system goes wild and starts opening dozens of copies of the file manager. It opens windows that browse to the drive, and also a bunch of "home" windows. The only way to stop it is to switch the drive off.
Help?
Thanks,
Mary

What is your version of Mint and what is the desktop environment? If you don't know open a terminal and enter:

Code: Select all

inxi -Sz
Paste the output here.

Try changing the usb port and the usb cable.
Do you have another computer or os to test the drive?
If problem persists run following in terminal and post the result after connecting the usb drive.

Code: Select all

dmesg | tail

Code: Select all

mary@mythbox:~$ inxi -Sz
System: Host: mythbox Kernel: 3.16.0-4-amd64 x86_64 (64 bit)
Desktop: Cinnamon 3.2.2 Distro: LinuxMint 2 betsy
I tested the drive with a mac, and it works fine [linux and mac formatted partitions]

Now it's working fine on LMDE as well. Huh. Maybe it just needed to get warmed back up?
Thanks all.
