I was told to install backports last year as the kernel back then didn't support my wifi card. On Mint 18 the card works out of the box and I have internet. Does JeremyB's backports solution for Mint 17.3 apply on LMDE2?

Maybe this is the cause: Running "modprobe ath10k_pci" shows that the ath10k_pci module looks for the firmware in a folder called QCA6174, but not in any folder called QCA6164."
