Kernel 4.11.0-041100-generic

Postby kneedragon1962 » Wed May 24, 2017 5:52 am

This is not quite a tutorial, and I am an old n00b, so this is just a notice that you can get and install the latest kernel in LMDE exactly the same way you could a few months ago.

http://www.m-opensolutions.com/?p=884

This tells you how to do it,

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.11/

... and this is what we're up to now.

You get a term, and you make the commands mentioned in the first post, but you need to alter / edit them to include the files mentioned in the second. Be careful of accidental white-spaces, those result in a 404....

As of now, I have linux-image-4.11.0-041100-generic_4.11.0-041100.201705041534_amd64.deb running, and it seems to do the VBoxGuestAdditions stuff on install. I couldn't tell you much about how well it works, I only just got it, but it certainly looks to all be working exactly like the 3.16 dinosaur.... FireFox works, youtube works, and I can watch videos and listen to them.

Are you SURE that you want to install an Ubuntu kernel in Mint's Debian edition ?

I agree - probably not a good idea. Ubuntu kernels might work, but they're not build for Debian and you could have all sorts of "fun" if you did this.
Better to use Debian backports and get kernel 4.9.

Ya know (going off on a slight tangent here), the Debian 3.16 kernel was actually maintained by the Ubuntu developers up until April 2016, it seems. https://bits.debian.org/2014/07/kernel- ... essie.html But of course that doesn't mean they handled the binaries, just the source (and they did a pretty good job of it IMHO).
