(SOLVED) LMDE2 Support?

Post by sleeper12 »

I know LMDE2 is LTS, but until when? Will the arrival of LMDE3 shorten LMDE2 support? Not sure if my old laptops will be able to handle 3 (Cinnamon), so will probably stick with 2 (Mate) until support ends.

Hi, @sleeper12

The answer to your question is no, if you are referring to the Debian base of LMDE2.
The LTS Team will prepare the transition to Debian 8 "Jessie", which is the current oldstable release. The LTS team will take over support from the Security Team on June 17, 2018.

Debian 8 will also receive Long Term Support for five years after its initial release with support ending on June 30, 2020.

Cheers.

I'm confused, does this mean LMDE 2 Mate is supported until June 30, 2020...or am I reading wrong.

It says that Debian Jessie, which is the base of LMDE2, is supported until that date. The base of LMDE2 will continue to get updates the same as the Debian Jessie base. It says nothing about the desktop environment.

My apologies for confusing you. With you being on LMDE I assumed you would know the difference.

Cheers.

LMDE 2 is based on Debian 8, for which regular support ended mid June this year. The Debian LTS team took over support from then and will continue to provide security updates till end of June 2020. LMDE 2 adds to Debian 8 packages for Cinnamon, MATE, the Mint tools, the Xapps, Firefox non-ESR and more. For how long those will be supported is the open question.

I think we can expect an announcement about this after the final release of LMDE 3 is done and the upgrade path for LMDE 2 to LMDE 3 opens. Along with providing LMDE 2 users with instructions on how to upgrade to LMDE 3, it will give them a timeline for planning their upgrade.
