mintUpdate time lags

Postby chevalier_bleu » Sun Sep 04, 2016 11:18 am

Hi all,

why does it always take 2 to 3 days until mintUpdate in LMDE2 delivers the updates that apt-get delivers on debian directly? This also applies to packages untested by mint team of levels 3, 4 and 5.

And this also includes the security relevant updates like grub or kernel or whatsoever. Reposyncing could be done in 2 or 3 hours.

I thtink at least for security relevant updates a much shorter delay should be aspired.

LMDE 2 uses the Debian Jessie repositories directly, or the mirror you have configured for it. Only the software Linux Mint adds on top of Debian (Cinnamon, MATE, all the Mint tools and themes and such) comes from the Linux Mint repositories. If there is a delay of days, it's either because of the mirror for the package base repositories you've set has delays or because you've configured Update Manager to auto-refresh too infrequently. In Update Manager's Edit > Preferences menu you can configure the auto-refresh. As noted there, that configures the period between auto-refresh while Update Manager is running. If you set it to say 1 day, it won't update till you have had your computer turned on for a whole day.

Aside from the additional Linux Mint repositories and possibly incorrect configuration of Update Manager on your part, there is no difference between when upgrades are available from the used Debian mirror. If you select the same mirror on Debian, it will get the upgrades at the same time. You can always manually refresh update manager to trigger the same action (downloading the latest packages index cache from the mirrors) as apt-get does.
