Where can I report a system failure?

Post by cooky »

Hi,

I found two failures in my system report section. I guess it's connected with the latest updates of LMDE 4. Shall I report them, if yes, how can I do that?

Thanks,

Please quote the failures verbatim in a reply here so that you may be advised how to deal with them.

Thanks for your response. I apologize, but those failures disappeared. I had to leave and I thought that I have to wait longer for an answer, so Shut down system and left. Now I see that there's no failures. Maybe I can check in some logs what was wrong, any advice how?

BTW: Would you please explain me what's about such log regarding security :
"xxxx" a password is required ; TTY=unknown ; PWD=/home/"xxxx" ; USER=root ; COMMAND=/usr/sbin/hddtemp -nq -u C /dev/sda

"xxxx" is my user name :-)

This is telling you that some application you run tried to check the hard drive temps but was not permitted to due to that function needing elevated privileges.

It will be inxi producing it being run via System Reports as inxi does try and report the hard drive temps, but needs to be run with sudo to do so.

E.g. From a terminal the first run without sudo will produce a similar log warning, the second run doesn't and the hard drive temperatures are reported.

thanks smurphos for your post. IT means that if I want to get enough privileges to inxi I need to edit system files?

Not really, you can just run inxi directly from the terminal with sudo to avoid the warning in the logs and get the extra output that requires elevated privileges.

Thank you that's working. No log about it.

Would you advise anything about such error in logs, as well?

It's from: brltty

https://brltty.app/ - is a an accessibility aid for blind users. It looks like it is enabled by default in LMDE4. The errors are it scanning for and failing to find a braille input device.

If you don't need it you should be able to disable it -

In a terminal

Code: Select all

sudo systemctl disable brltty
then reboot.

Double check it is disabled with command

Code: Select all

systemctl status brltty

Smurphos, thank you, again. Fortunately, I don't need to use it and it's great that LMDE has such application. Anyway, it has been disabled and obviously logs don't show it anymore.

I am grateful for this help!!!
I guess it's easy for you and from my perspective you seemed to be pretty advanced user, though

I wouldn't like misuse your kindness, so may I ask you about two other (last logs issues) which are with me from the first boot of this great system?

Also regarding this topic I created. I've noticed that from time to time there is a system failure happening and it's visible in the System Reports section. I see it and after reboot it disappears. Is that important to notice or to get logs from it or I shouldn't be worry about that?

That no problem - ask away - that what the forums are for.

If what you are seeing in System reports is xn-status-watcher crashing it's a known bug. A fix will hopefully come via updates in the reasonably near future.

Thank you :-)

1. Error parsing options; rc = [-2]

2.
a) Could not find valid key in user session keyring for sig specified in mount option: [d1333889c88bf60a]
b) Could not find key with description: [d1333889c88bf60a]

I guess that the second one refers to encrypted HOME directory. Am I right?

Hi,

I think all those messages are related to home folder encryption - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1718658

Can you report the output of the terminal command dmesg run just after a reboot and logging in so we can see the errors in context.

You can copy the output from the terminal window and paste into your reply surrounded by

tags.

Hi Guys! My first post. I I'd like clarification on the inxi warning in the logs as I'm seeing it too - it's the last issue I'm chasing after install... I'm not understanding how running inxi manually mitigates the warning in the logs. If inxi is being routinely run by System Reports, is there a way to set inxi to run with sudo privileges to get rid of warnings?

What surprises me a bit is that LMDE is still pretty close to Ubuntu. Smurphos do you know if such bug is also reported in the Debian bug trucker?

As far as I can tell ecryptfs was dropped from the current stable Debian release due to this and other bugs, but Mint ship it from their repos for LMDE

@Mike_D - my advice would be not to worry about it and go about your day. Running inxi manually isn't a solution - it's just to demonstrate why it happens, that it is not a security concern, and how to get info displayed that inxi does require elevated privileges for.

Thanks Smurphos for your answers. What I know is that decrypting home folder is quite problematic, so I guess I won't use encryption during the next fresh install of LMDE.

I have some other issues to work with, but I'll create another post in forum to have an order here :-)
