Dual boot (LMDE 5 / Win 10) with LMDE 5 partition encryption ?

Post by newbie3636 »

I have a laptop with only one disk slot, and I would like to do a dual boot (LMDE 5 / Win 10) with LMDE 5 partition encryption during LMDE installation.
Is there a way to do it?

After some time to search (see below some of the info I found), it seems that it is not possible to do LMDE partition-only encryption (but Debian could do it if I well understood), but only full-disk encryption is possible during LMDE installation (see the window installation similar to this one for regular Mint https://junyelee.blogspot.com/2020/11/f ... n-fde.html).
Please correct me if I'm wrong!
I'm a linux newbie and I would have preferred to have the full LMDE partition encrypted at installation, and not only my data encrypted in a separate container or partition and to have to do lot of daily manipulations consequently and moreover without the full linux system protected by encryption when computer is off.

Currently my laptop is working fine with dual boot LMDE 5 / Win 10 but without encryption for LMDE.

Thank you in advance to the cheerful and supportive Linux Mint community I discover every day and from which I'm happy to belong to now!

Full encryption is difficult to recover data if something goes wrong. Instead consider veracrypt as a solution.

Hi newbie3636,

Any luck finding the answer? I have almost exactly the same question, except my computer is an iMac running MacOS, dual boot with Linux Mint 19.3 for a couple of years. I decide to replace Mint 19.3 with LMDE 5 in the near future.

I recently learned that data stored in an unencrypted drive/partition can be easily accessed by booting from a USB drive, which is really scary.

I have searched related topics over Internet, it seems LMDE install can only encrypt the whole disk or home folder only. Encrypted LMDE system partition can not be done without some complicated procedure, which I will never try, since my knowledge about Linux is so limited. Not sure if this is the final conclusion.

I am able to create a partition with 'Disk' program and create a 'LUKS encrypted partition, let's say 250 GB, but LMDE installer would never be able to install on that partition, says "not enough disk space" even though the partition is unlocked.

I wouldn't mind just getting home folder encrypted, but some articles on the Internet mentioned that will noticeably slow computer down. I do need access home folder very often, some of my Windows programs are located under ~/.wine/drive_c/ folder.

Thanks!
