problems shutdown and reboot

Post by Zeeman »

my laptop doesn't shut down or reboot with LMDE 4, the problem also occurred when i shut down the live usb. I think the problem is related to my hardware, most of which is not suitable for linux (amd / ATI stoney) and the linux kernel 4.19.
I had modified the kernel in the following way: apt update && apt install -t buster-backports linux-image-amd64 -y && apt install -t buster-backports linux-headers-amd64 -y && apt install -t buster-backports firmware-linux firmware-linux-nonfree -y && reboot ( found in topic: viewtopic.php?t=313645)
this command line installed kernel 5.6 and solved the shutdown and reboot issue. but i still got updates for kernel 4.19 and in not sure i got 5.6 updates. So I reinstalled LMDE 4 and shut down manually each time, In the topic (see link above) you can read that Backports is already installed in LMDE 4, but I don't find any of that in the synaptic package manager
Now my question is how do I fix the shutdown and reboot problem or how do I change the kernel in LMDE 4 the correct way.

It's not a problem to get and install the 4.19 kernel afterwards. It won't take away the newer kernel. It is a small download and is normal. You did not need to reinstall.

To enable the higher kernels:

Code: Select all

sudo apt update
Then:

Code: Select all

sudo apt install -t buster-backports linux-image-amd64  linux-headers-amd64 firmware-linux firmware-linux-nonfree
Then reboot you PC

Also don't use a forced shutdown in your current situation. Instead use

Code: Select all

REISUB

Thanks for the quick response LanceM, Shutting down and rebooting is no longer a problem. I just hope that, just like before, I don't get any more updates for the 4.19 kernel instead of the 5.6 kernel because the 4.19 kernel can still be found in the synaptic package manager.
I did get a lot of notifications of missing firmware, but that was also the case during the update of the new installation, but more about that in another topic

If updates come for 4.19 install them. It will not change your current kernel.
