[SOLVED] How to upgrade xfce4

Post by jarp53 »

I've been using LMDE4 with Xfce4 desktop for a while and it has been a very good and stable system , but I really would like to upgrade Xfce, I could only install version 4.12 , so I would like to step up 4.14 , is this possible, and if so how can I do it .

In two words or less, you don't.

4.12 is the latest version in the Debian Buster repositories so going to 4.14 will require one of a) finding a Debian-based distro that has it (MX 19 has 4.16) and using that instead of LMDE4, b) compiling it from source code and satisfying all of its dependencies, c) potentially borking your system by manually installing a 4.14 xfce that was built for Debian Buster, or d) enable the MX Linux repositories, which support Debian and will probably also bork your system.

If you want the latest and greatest then perhaps you shouldn't be using Debian anything. One of the main reasons for Debian's existence is stability, where stability means very little change, and where very little change means not having the latest and greatest. Your best choice is probably to take a look at option a).
