gnome-screenshot problems after installing nvidia-driver

Post by 7954ever »

Hi all. I use Linux Mint Debbie 4, and after I upgraded my kernel to 5.10 and installed nvidia-driver more often than not when I use gnome-screenshot it gets distorted. It's like it's flickering between different layers and the result is mixed. Do anyone have any idea what may be causing this and how to fix it? Thanx!

Where did that kernel come from? I seriously doubt that it came from the repositories, and if that's a valid doubt then nothing can be done until you move back to a standard Debian kernel from the repositories.

Nope! But as an expirement, install scrot (SCReen shOT, small program hardly any reqs), and run it:

Code: Select all

scrot
you'll get a DATE.TIME.SIZE.png file; see if the problem persists.
Please edit your original post title to include [SOLVED] if/when it is solved!
Your data and OS are backed up....right?

It was debian backports.

You still might need to regress it if the issue persists.

Please provide your system information as described in Section 5 of READ: How To Get Help!. Also let us know why you changed the kernel. What issues were you having that you felt the newer kernel would address?

It's my understanding the latest kernel is 4.19.0-14. I believe there are also some other package updates, but I'm not sure. (I do not have an LMDE install to check.)

On April 1, 2021 (but I guess it wasn't a joke), at 12:23 pm on the official Mint Blog / March page, Clem answered to some guy called Steve (it was about Mint 20.1 but I think his reply can be transposed to LMDE) :
If you need to jump on 5.10, you don’t use proprietary drivers and you can’t wait, you can use mainline (https://www.linuxuprising.com/2018/10/2 ... el-in.html).
Your problem may not be a kernel problem but a proprietary driver problem.
My humble experience agrees with this : I'm lucky enough to have a test machine besides my work computers on which I can experiment. Kernel upgrades were very erratic with nvidia proprietary drivers even if the system was always resilient enough to run. The problem vanished when using basic drivers (nouveau for video). This test machine (Asus N750JK laptop + GeForce GTX 850M) is now running fine with kernel 5.11.6 and nouveau driver since a month.
So, my piece of advice would be to try the opposite of :
I've reinstalled the entire system and have now the built in 4.19.0-8. But the issue remains.
which would be : don't install the nvidia-driver and upgrade your kernel in the way Clem's link suggests if that's you need.
PS : I notice I'm a bit late in this discussion but my comment (obviously more Clem's advice than my experimentations) may help others.

Hi all. Again thanx for the replies. The problem completely went away after installing:

firmware-amd-graphics firmware-linux firmware-linux-free firmware-linux-nonfree firmware-misc-nonfree amd64-microcode

Why and how I can not say.
