What to use to play a VIDEO CD (not a VIDEO DVD) [SOLVED]

Post by ron_h »

LMDE4 Cinnamon 64bit

I came across a souvenir of a holiday in China about 10 years ago. It is a VIDEO CD (VCD). I know I played it back then, not sure if it was in a DVD player or in a Windows PC, I know it wasn't a Linux PC because I hadn't started using Linux then. I just tried to play it with VLC and got the following message

Code: Select all

Cannot play non-UDF mastered DVD
I welcome suggestions as to what player app to use or otherwise how to play it.

Ron

PS don't currently have a DVD player available, that's why I tried on the PC

This should solve it:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install libdvd-pkg
followed by

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg-reconfigure libdvd-pkg
Found here https://askubuntu.com/questions/505684/ ... dvd-movies and here https://www.videolan.org/developers/libdvdcss.html
If you think the issue is solved, edit your original post and add the word solved to the title.

VLC should play that fine if you open the device. No need to install DVD decyphering, because that is not there on vcd.

Thanks, vanadium

So simple, and it works, so long as I select VCD

Thanks, vimes666, I'll remember that as well if I have a problem in future
