[SOLVED] LMDE4 Clean install - Boot Device Not Found

Post by Pepper-Mint-Patty »

Tried 3 times to get LMDE4 installed on an empty hdd in an old HP machine As single boot.

used these settings
auto install, choose HDD. No LVM LOGICAL VOLUME MANAGEMENT
install GRUB on /dev/sda
no hd encryption
BIOS [no legacy] UEFI hybrid with CSM

RESULT Impossible to boot: no os.
3F0 Boot Device Not Found or Hard Disk Error
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01442956

hd check = ok
smart test + short dst = passed
memory check = passed

What the hell is going wrong? :(
sdb = live usb

Re: LMDE4 Clean install - Boot Device Not Found

Post by AndyMH »

With CSM enabled, you might have booted the install stick in legacy mode. sda has a gpt partition table = nowhere for grub.

Boot your install stick, open a terminal and efibootmgr:

Code: Select all

andy@T432 ~ $ efibootmgr
EFI variables are not supported on this system.
If you get this you are booting (and installing) in legacy mode, anything else is UEFI.

Tried this in vain.

Code: Select all

sudo efibootmgr --bootorder 0000, 0003
sudo efibootmgr --bootorder 0003*, debian
sudo efibootmgr --bootorder Boot0003*, debian
And

Code: Select all

sudo efibootmgr --bootorder 0003

Mount the EFI partition, in your case /dev/sda1
Look for folders /EFI/debian or /EFI/mint and inside them look for bootx64.efi or grubx64.efi file. Rename it to BOOTX64.EFI (all uppercase) and move it to /EFI/BOOT (all uppercase).

thnx mr-victory, I understood from Andy i had to reinstall into legacy mode. Which i just did. In vain. Now this comes up

Code: Select all

$ sudo efibootmgr
EFI variables are not supported on this system.
BUT usr/lib/systemd/boot/efi has:
linuxx64.efi.stub
systemd-bootx64.efi

Could you please explain how to proceed?

Having confirmed that mint had booted in UEFI mode, I couldn't see anything obviously wrong with the setup. Same goes for the legacy install. If it is still complaining about 'no OS found' my best guess is that somehow grub either wasn't installed or installed correctly.

Big but... I'm not an LMDE user so don't know my way around its installer (assume it's not ubiquity = ubuntu as in 'normal' cinnamon). Unless you are specifically trying to get LMDE running you could try the normal cinnamon.

Although it is a very bad start i do want to try LDME4. tHE iso was verified.
iNSTALLER SUMMARY shows: #install bootloader on /dev/sda #automated instal on /dev/sda
#LVM disabled #Disk encryption disabled

BIOS has these options #pxe internal nic boot #pxe internal ipv4 nic boot #pxe internal ipv6 nic boot
My wild guess: something in BIOS settings

How to check grub?

Run boot-repair, there is a copy on the cinnamon iso, not sure about LMDE.

=================== Suggested repair
The default repair of the Boot-Repair utility would purge (in order to fix packages) and reinstall the grub-efi-amd64-signed of sda2, using the following options: sdb2/boot/efi,
Additional repair would be performed: unhide-bootmenu-10s use-standard-efi-file

=================== Blockers in case of suggested repair
The current session is in Legacy mode. Please reboot the computer, and use this software in an EFI session. This will enable this feature. For example, use a live-USB of Boot-Repair-Disk-64bit (www.sourceforge.net/p/boot-repair-cd), after making sure your BIOS is set up to boot USB in EFI mode.

=================== Advice in case of suggested repair
Warning: continuing without internet would leave your system unbootable. Please connect internet.
The boot of your PC is in Legacy mode. You may want to retry after changing it to EFI mode.
Alternatively, you may want to retry after deactivating the [Separate /boot/efi partition:] option.
Do you want to continue?

=================== Final advice in case of suggested repair
Please do not forget to make your BIOS boot on sdb2/efi/.../grub*.efi file!

The boot of your PC is in Legacy mode. You may want to retry after changing it to EFI mode.

=================== User settings
The settings chosen by the user will not act on the boot.

Re: LMDE4 Clean install - Boot Device Not Found

Post by Pepper-Mint-Patty »

Hi Fossy.
To enable bootrepair i had to change to EFI mode. MAde the report as shown above. Also tried the MAIN repair buttons including Advanced Options: Grub locations+ grub options. This resulted every time in:

Code: Select all

grub-ef--amd64 signed purge cancelled. pls report to bootrepair
Now having a legacy install on a uefi boot: no boot. Changed to legacy boot, no boot either:

Code: Select all

Boot device not found/ install OS on HDD (3fo)
Fossy wrote:as simple as that ?
Unfortunately not. Though i do think BIOS is causing trouble.
Only 'grub-glue-efi' file exists, 246kb.
Anyhow i wouldn't know how on earth to 'to make your BIOS boot on sdb2/efi/.../grub*.efi file'

I managed to secure this Boot Info Script.
Mind there are 2 usb sticks involved: 1= live boot, 2 = to copy this script to.

the huge boot info script
Boot Info Script 8f991e4 + Boot-Repair extra info [Boot-Info 25oct2017]

=================== Suggested repair

I did have a look at the output from boot-repair and I couldn't see anything obviously wrong, so I'm stumped.

Not that it helps here, but for the future, boot-repair generates a lot of output, you can upload it to termbin, more here:
https://linuxhint.com/linux_mint_boot_repair/
or when posting the output in a post enclose it between code markers - the </> button above the reply window, makes it more readable.

thnx Andy.
I've done another install
INSTALLER SUMMARY shows:

Code: Select all

#install bootloader on /dev/sda #automated instal on /dev/sda
#LVM logical volume management disabled
#Disk encryption disabled
After reboot BIOS let me choose the Grub.
Selected EFI application image is not valid. 2 ways:
1 cancel + boot next option
2 continue loading

Code: Select all

##1 cancel + boot next option gets to:
select file system
#.ACPI etcetera
#\EFI debian
shimx64
grubx64
mmx64
fbx64
## selected grubx64 2 continue loading
Got me into LMDE4...

Code: Select all

apt update --allow-releaseinfo-change
and then update manager.
After all was updated reboot:

Code: Select all

expres bootoptions select:
-os boot man
-boot from efi
NO BOOTABLE image was found! Back to square 1.
Could run bootrepair again... :(
