Convert LMDE2 Mate to Cinnamon Edition

Post by mithodin » Wed Mar 27, 2019 8:49 am

Hi,
I'd like to upgrade an install of LMDE2 Mate to LMDE3. However, I know that the Mate edition has been discontinued.
If the difference between editions is just the userland (or is there a bigger difference?), it should be possible to convert to cinnamon edition and then do the upgrade, or not?

Hello,

This is not really recommended. It would be wiser to make a clean install of LMDE3 instead.

I am running a successful LMDE3 Cinnamon install from a LMDE2 Mate upgrade (which was upgraded previously from a LMDE1 Mate).

Just follow the original post about switching the install to "Cinnamon" before you upgrade. You can leave Mate installed. Mate will be downgraded to 16.1, which will be just fine. If you install backports, don't upgrade to Mate 20. Quite a few issues.

Hi ddurdle, thanks, the way you phrased it gave me the right keywords to find another post on the forum I had missed before.
