LMDE3 to LMDE4 Upgrade - Can I stay with MATE?

Post by donv »

LMDE3 MATE currently running on EeePC 1000HA – I would like to upgrade to LMDE4. Can I stay with MATE via the upgrade (done per https://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/2475) or will I need to switch to Cinnamon? If must switch, how/when?

You can keep both or delete one of them.

To install Mate:

Code: Select all

sudo apt install mate-desktop-environment -y

To purge cinnamon, make first an snapshot to prevent fails or data loss then:

Code: Select all

sudo apt autoremove --purge cinnamon nemo cinnamon-screensaver cinnamon-control-center -y
After reboot you'll see just Mate as default desktop environment.

Result test on an VM:

I add the Mate Desktop and purge Cinnamon.

Make first an snapshot with Timeshift, without it no upgrade possible.

You have to respect the tutorial from A to Z for the upgrading.

At D2 remove this packet with synaptic to pursue the upgrading:

Code: Select all

libservlet3.1-java

Just Continue respecting the tutorial, and after a long time you can boot on LMDE4.

At the boot choose Mate Desktop in the logging menu, you need to log you in entering your credentials manually.

At this time we can purge Cinnamon like:

Code: Select all

sudo apt autoremove --purge cinnamon nemo cinnamon-screensaver cinnamon-control-center -y

After a reboot, In the logging menu we can see that Xsession are the default Desktop Environment, to fix it we have 2 methods.

LMDE Mate and Cinnamon use both GDM3 as display manager.

Method 1:

Open an terminal:

Code: Select all

sudo nano ~/.dmrc

And modify your desktop session like:

Code: Select all

[Desktop]
Session=mate

Image

Method 2:

Open an terminal;

Code: Select all

sudo update-alternatives --config x-session-manager

Choose the appropriate entry.

And voila Mate are our default Desktop Environment at the boot.
