Installed Mate in LMDE4

Post by urdrwho »

I wouldn't do this on my main computers but on my experimental unit, I did it. I'm one of those people who don't like to combine environments.

I have LMDE4 32 bit installed (old computer) and Cinnamon is the DE but I wanted to see what would happen with a Mate DE install. The install went well and everything works as expected. https://wiki.mate-desktop.org/#!pages/download.md

I find that Mate takes about 15% > 20% less memory than Cinnamon.

I could have gone the route of installing the German community LMDE4 Mate edition but I don't speak the language and didn't feel like playing with language database installs. https://www.linuxmintusers.de/index.php?topic=60694.0

Just wondering why LMDE4 only has the Cinnamon DE?

-- Very cool. My curiosity is this. Is it stable though? I've had the worst luck with so many versions of Mate being crash proned for me ( ubuntu versions 16.04 and newer including 20 and LM versions 17 and newer including 20) I always end up right back at Cinnamon which has been rock solid for me.

I had no problems with Mate running. It 's going to take some more space on the HDD.

Below is a discussion about putting KDE on LDME4. Yeah KDE always takes more space and I am not found of KDE like I once was years ago. KDE would be good on my new main computer that my son built for me last June. Really nice case!

Having done multiple installs and trying to like Debian 10.5 --- I can agree with them " LMDE just works and Debian do not. If you ever tried Debian you know this for sure, and if not, well, try it!"

From KDE discussion ------
"This alone is why not to do it.

After this operation, 2,342 MB of additional disk space will be used.

Do you want to continue? [Y/n]

so you are downloading 2.3gb on top of the 1.5gb that LMDE already is, a complete waste.

----adding LXQT is much less involed----

After this operation, 363 MB of additional disk space will be used.

Do you want to continue? [Y/n]

---adding XFCE4 is much, much less involved----

After this operation, 61.7 MB of additional disk space will be used.

Do you want to continue? [Y/n]"

Just out of curiosity, what Mate version did you install? The mentioned v1.6 available for LMDE or the latest 1.8.1? TIA.

I installed Mate using tasksel...then upgrade to Mate 1.2.4 from Buster backports. It has been rock solid on my LMDE4 install....so good that I removed all traces of Cinnamon....
