Lenovo B590 doesn't boot after installing LMDE4
Hey,
after two succesful installations of Debbie, I wanted to renew my old Lenovo B590, which still had Windows 7 installed.
Booting from the Live-USB was no problem and I installed Debbie.
Now it doesn't boot and it seems to me like the Harddrive is not recognised.
(I tried installing it with LVM, without LVM and writing the boot-partition in alle possible partitions (sda, sda1, sda2), but always the same)
Media-Test failure is showed on the startscreen. and i come directly to the BootMenu, when I select the HDD it just starts all over.
I ran the lenovo Diagnostics - Quick storage device test, which failed at smart short self-test and Target read test, the rest passed.
The BIOS Boot is set to to both, Legacy and UEFI.
BIOS-Version: H1ET84WW (1.22)
HDD: WD5000LPVT-24G33T1
Bootin from the USBDrive still works.
I'm pretty sure you need more Details etc., but don't know what helps you, so pls tell me what you need to know!

Re: Lenovo B590 doesn't boot after installing LMDE4
start the live media again and use the boot rescue program, you're missing the bootloader and that will install it for you.
I’ll tell you a DNS joke but be advised, it could take up to 24 hours for everyone to get it.
Re: Lenovo B590 doesn't boot after installing LMDE4
do you know what video card is in the machine?

I already started Boot Repair, but it didn't solve the problem.antikythera wrote: ⤴Wed Dec 16, 2020 7:45 am start the live media again and use the boot rescue program, you're missing the bootloader and that will install it for you.
Edith: or do you mean smth else then the Boot Repair?
Its on the CPU, an Intel 3rd Gen Graphic Controller
the CPU is Intel i5-3230M (2,6GHz)
Re: Lenovo B590 doesn't boot after installing LMDE4
I just remembered, that the first time I wanted to install Debbie on this machine I got an Error. I just restarted the Laptop and then there was no problem. It's btw. the same USB-Drive/ISO-Image I used for my other succesfull installations. I now tried to install again and got the same Error:
'ascii' codec can't decode byte 0xc3 in position 36: ordinal not in range(128)
So, any suggestions? Is the ISO somehow broken or is it with the Laptop, motherboard, HDD, driver incompability etc.?

Re: Lenovo B590 doesn't boot after installing LMDE4
That's a UTF-8 locale error, which as far duckduckgo says from stackoverflow is not hardware related. The hardware should be okay, I was running LMDE4 on an i3-3110M with Intel HD 4000 GPU up until it died recently. However to double check what hardware you have and see if there are any potential blockers (e.g. network adaptor, TPM or something else.) can you post inxi -Fxxxmz output from live media please?illTill wrote: ⤴Wed Dec 16, 2020 10:28 am I just remembered, that the first time I wanted to install Debbie on this machine I got an Error. Also, what language are you trying to install with? It may be worth doing the install with en-us and changing the language and locality after installation if you cannot get past that odd error.

Re: Lenovo B590 doesn't boot after installing LMDE4
I tried it in German, as I did in the previous installations as well.
inxi output:
Edit:
I'm really not an expert with OS and partitions and so on, but when I remember correctly, this Laptop got this One-Key.Recovery and therefor a separate partition for it. Is it possible, that this Lenovo specific structure is now failing the boot, as there is no "connection" (of a driver or so) between motherboard and HDD?
Edit2 aka Update:
I tried installing in us-en and there was no Error while installing. But still not able to boot.
That's btw.: the screen while starting:
I can btw. enter the Harddrive when I boot with the USB-drive, so as far as I understand, there should be no broken cable.
I also checked the Boot-Order and set the HDD om first place, as this was th solution I find online.

"Partition:

That looks like you probably have some bad sectors on the HDD.
Either try to repair the HDD or replace it with a new HDD.
Good luck.

That's the bootable media not the internal storage. There's nothing to worry about with that partition information, it's the normal state for it.

Re: Lenovo B590 doesn't boot after installing LMDE4
You may do better with Mint 20 or 20.1 then for that laptop. The support for EFI is marginally better from Ubiquity installer used by Mint 20/20.1 than the quite old version of the Calamares installer on LMDE4.

Re: Lenovo B590 doesn't boot after installing LMDE4
Did you verify the integrity of your ISO?
I don't know a whole lot but I know that that actually fixed one of my problems I had on my first install, And I knew all of my hardware worked.

Re: Lenovo B590 doesn't boot after installing LMDE4
Ditto on my previous post.
I would reformat the HDD to .ext4 (erasing Win7 if you do NOT want to keep it).
Then rewrite the .iso using USB Image Writer under Accessories.
Then try again.
