Is there anything I can do to shorten the boot time? I tried editing the grub file to this:
"GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash video=SVIDEO-1:d" but no improvement

Contrary to popular myth, Linux cannot do the impossible, and as you've discovered, miracles take longer.

LMDE uses the Cinnamon desktop and it is just far too heavy for that poor old thing. You need a distribution that was built closer to the end of last century than almost a quarter of the way into this one. Puppy Linux, LinuxLite, Tiny Core, Antix...

And I thought I was installing one of the lightest distros! Actually once booted up it works fine. Do you know if the distros you suggested provide long term support?

No, I don't. I would have to read about each one of those potential options, and perhaps look for others as well, then I would have to relay everything back to you. My preference is always not to give people all the answers unless there is a specific technical issue to be resolved, but don't take that the wrong way; it is not a brush off. It's an encouragement for you to do some research for yourself. You will learn far more and far quicker than by me spoon-feeding you, and effectively doing for you what you could easily do for yourself.

LM19.2 Xfce 32-bit would be lighter than LDME4-Cinnamon. You could give it a try. It is supported for another three years. It will not be as light-weight as the options Kadaitcha Man has listed, but I think others are using it (or MATE) on computers similar to yours. You would have to decide based on your planned use and expectations of the system whether or not the response times are acceptable.

I do not think your start-up time is that long for your computer given its specs and the fact you are loading Cinnamon.

Thanks SMG, I'll check this out.
@ KM - Point taken. I had researched a lot of distros already like puppy/xubuntu/lubuntu/tiny core/q4os/debian, and many more but they all had their drawbacks mostly due to LTS or lack of. I was merely looking for a quick steer from anyone who had been through the pain barrier to spare me the grief! Cheers.

That's quite ok. Some of us have a broad knowledge across the OS, and some have a deep knowledge of certain aspects, and some have both, so the answers to general questions will often vary widely, whereas the resolution of definitive technical issues will generally not vary all that much. As you can see, @SMG has suggested a lighter edition and version of Linux Mint, which is a great suggestion. To be honest, I prefer to focus on definitive technical issues because providing answers to general questions often requires a lot of assumptions to be made, and I feel that assumptions should be avoided, but that's just me.

Good luck.

I'm using LMDE 32 bit right now but with 1.1 GHz (two cores). The Linux system only sees two gigabytes. I think XFCE is the leanest option for GUIs. Maybe you should enable vewing the text that used to appear at boot back in the 90s. I don't know how to do that.

after installing LMDE4, you can install Mate, Xfce, or LXDE to lighten the load

I installed LMDE4 on my old HP Mini with a single core Atom, 2GB Ram, and a 60GB SSD. Amusingly it took 5 hours to do the install and the updates until it would run properly without asking for more updates and installs I did add VLD and Smile.
All I plan to use it for is for friends to use Libreoffice. This in turn to read E-Books. :D
Yes! It is a slow boot, but not much worse than XFCE 19.3. With the Cinnamon it is much more useful than the abbreviations available with XFCE. The speed is definitely better once it is booted up however.

I loaned the HP Mini to a friend who has always used apple. He agreed that it was a slow boot but it does so much more than any of his Apples did. It has bluetooth so he is able to communicate with his apple computers and send them files and read them when he cannot download them through the apple connections. He and his wife enjoy reading from the small screen with larger fonts without squinting.
