[✅ SOLVED] Linux Mint installation and UEFI: "no bootable device"

Post by HelpMeWithThisIssue »

The Hardware:
Packard Bell Butterfly S
https://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Pa ... 390.0.html
Image

The Software:
Linux Mint 4 "Debbie" - Cinnamon (64-bit)

The problem:
I installed the OS using a live USB and also formatted the old partition (Windows Vista) with the installation. But now the screen shows "no bootable device".

Notes:
- I have no issues booting the OS from the USB (live)
- boot-repair doesn't repair the issue
- Can't switch to legacy mode on bios (even after setting supervisor pass), it seems like the bios doesn't support that option. There is no
mention to uefi/legacy there.
- I don't care about uefi, as long as I'm able to install LM, I don't care whether it is installed or not in this way.
- LM ISO was correctly verified.

I'm all ears.

Re: Some issues regarding Linux Mint installation and UEFI

Post by karlchen »

Hello, HelpMeWithThisIssue.

Boot your machine from the LMDE 4 live system, which you used for installing as well, please.
Then open a terminal window and execute the following commandline

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxz
Mark the complete text output, which the command will display, with your mouse.
Press <Ctrl><Shift>C to copy the marked text output and paste it into your next reply.

The inxi ouput should give us sufficient technical details on your machine. And it should also reveal whether you booted in UEFI mode or in Bios mode. - If the machine only offers UEFI mode, then it must have booted in UEFI mode.
(My office notebook is UEFI boot only e.g., but it is many years younger than Windows Vista.)

Best regards,
Karl

Re: [❌ NOT solved] Linux Mint installation and UEFI: "no bootable device"

Post by karlchen »

Hello, HelpmeWithThisIssue.

On UEFI / MBR details in your inxi output:

Code: Select all

Machine:
Type: Laptop System: Packard Bell product: EN Butterfly s v: V1.04
  serial: <filter> Chassis: type: 10 serial: <filter>
Mobo: Packard Bell model: EN Butterfly s v: PSMBOU-1234567
  serial: <filter> UEFI: Packard Bell v: 1.04 date: 05/27/2009
Though more than 11 years old, the machine seems to have UEFI.

This would match the GPT disk partition on the internal harddisk. - You need UEFI boot for GPT to work.

Code: Select all

Drives:
Local Storage: total: 303.69 GiB used: 2.53 GiB (0.8%)
  ID-1: /dev/sda vendor: Hitachi model: HTS545032B9A300 size: 298.09 GiB
  speed: 1.5 Gb/s rotation: 5400 rpm serial: <filter> rev: C60F temp: 28 C
  scheme: GPT
This means that your machine should be booted in UEFI mode. Also any Mint installation has to be done in UEFI mode.
But the next section mentions MBR instead:

Code: Select all

ID-2: /dev/sdb type: USB vendor: TDK model: Media Trans-It Drive
size: 3.72 GiB serial: <filter> rev: PMAP scheme: MBR
ID-3: /dev/sdc type: USB vendor: Transcend model: JetFlash Transcend 2GB
size: 1.88 GiB serial: <filter> rev: 8.07 scheme: MBR
So I suspect that you have created a bootable LMDE 4 live system which starts up in MBR mode (Bios boot) only.
This can/will happen if you create the LMDE 4 live system on a machine which still uses Bios mode and MBR boot sector.
(This happened to me once: I had created a Mint 19.3 live system on an old Bios boot machine. When I tried to boot an UEFI boot machine with it, it would not boot. - Recreated the same Mint 19.3 live system on the same pendrive, but on an UEFI boot machine. This live system booted in UEFI mode in UEFI machines and in Bios mode in Bios boot machines.)

I suspect that your machine permitted the MBR only LMDE 4 live system to boot and install. But booted in Bios mode, the installer will not create the needed UEFI partition and will not install Grub correctly. Result: the installed system cannot boot.

Solution:
Recreate the LMDE 4 live system in UEFI machine and when booting your HP from the live system make sure it is running UEFI mode as well.
My advice would be: re-install LMDE from scratch.
Yet, it might be possible to add the missing UEFI enabled to the already installed system, without complete re-installation, provided the needed UEFI partition is already present or can be added. - Not sure. Not enough experience with UEFI machines here, yet. My hardware is too old.

HTH,
Karl

I'm not quite sure about that, the following two sections are my two usb pendrives. Actually, there is an UEFI folder within the system. Anyway, it is true that I build the live usb from a non-uefi os, but I don't know how I may fix that (is not like I have dozens of computers) ...

Seems to me that the installer botched up the job, as you only got a 1.88 GiB size partition on you hard drive, not using the full 298 GiB.
I assume the 2 GiB partitions on sdb/sdc are usb sticks.
Best is to redo from scratch but verify the installer iso beforehand, maybe that already had an error.
It doesn't matter if you create the installation stick on a non-UEFI computer.

That is, unless the installed hard drive is broken, which yould be the case on this old computer.
^^
P.S.
maybe best to make sure that the hard drive works correctly by booting from the live-usb stick and wiping the hard drive with the partition tool called 'gparted' and format it as one complete 'ext4' partition, The partition table mode should be 'GPT' for UEFI.

Yes. I am aware that the 2 devices /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc are USB pendrives.
And my guess is that the pendrive, from which you booted the machine with LMDE 4, is /dev/sdc.

About recreating the live system on an UEFI boot machine:
Well, I was afraid that the PB machine might be the only available machine. Not totally uncommon that endusers have got precisely 1 notebook, not a bunch of them.
Sadly, I have got not idea how to get around this problem.
Or let us say, no idea which may help you: you might ask a relative or friend or a neighbour, who owns computer, which uses UEFI boot, whether you could create the LMDE 4 live system on that machine perhaps.
Maybe, too, there is another way.
As I had admitted before, at this point in time my experience with UEFI is still pretty limited. :(

I really hope someone with more UEFI specific experience will chime in and cut the Gordian Knot.

To my best knowledge (and I done it myself) it does not matter if the system you create the live-usb installer on is a UEFi or non-UEFI one.
I'd rather suspect that the (old) Hitachi drive has some serious issues that let the installer stumble.
That's why I proposed to use gparted form the live-usb stick an wipe the whole hard disk and try to format it before re-running the installation.

Re: [❌ NOT solved] Linux Mint installation and UEFI: "no bootable device"

Post by senjoz »

@HelpMeWithThisIssue
Please boot from the USB installation key in the live session (with another USB key disconnected). Open the terminal, make it fullscreen and execute next commands: sudo parted -l, lsblk -f and efibootmgr -v. Copy all outputs, including commands, and paste them in your replay. Please paste outputs between code tags,
paste terminal outputs here
. Maybe these outputs will reveal where the reason for gtting "no bootable device" is.

I also believe that it does not matter, at least for Linux Mint. Is it different for LMDE 4?

Regards, Jože

EDIT: Did you verify the ISO image?

Or let us say, no idea which may help you: you might ask a relative or friend or a neighbour, who owns computer, which uses UEFI boot, whether you could create the LMDE 4 live system on that machine perhaps.
Actually I have two computers, but the one I used doesn't have UEFI. In the one I'm trying to install LM I can install windows vista. I may use that to see if I can upgrade the BIOS, or burn the image using rufus maybe.

I followed your suggestion using this post as a reference https://askubuntu.com/a/743098 but yields the same result. Boot-repair output

Here is the output:

If I boot in the live session from the LMDE4 USB installation key and run lsblk -f, I get slightly different output as you for USB key part:

Code: Select all

NAME FSTYPE LABEL UUID FSAVAIL FSUSE% MOUNTPOINT
loop0 squashfs 0 100% /lib/live/mount/rootfs/filesystem.squashfs
sda iso9660 LMDE 4 Cinnamon 64-bit 2020-03-13-12-30-44-00
├─sda1 iso9660 LMDE 4 Cinnamon 64-bit 2020-03-13-12-30-44-00 0 100% /lib/live/mount/medium
└─sda2 vfat LMDE 4 Cinnamon 64-bit DEB0-0001
Probably that is because of the different methods of USB key preparation. Normally I use dd command, like:
sudo dd bs=4M if=/home/user/Downloads/lmde-4-cinnamon-64bit.iso of=/dev/sdb status=progress && sync

I checked outputs of terminal commands I suggested and also Boot-repair output you posted. Unfortunately, I could not detect the reason for getting "no bootable device". I can give you only three suggestions.

In UEFI check again boot options and boot order. In the output of efibootmgr -v you posted there is BootOrder: 0003,0002,0000,0001 but there is no description for Boot0003.

You can try to reinstall Grub to the sda device. Instructions on how to do it from live session: viewtopic.php?f=42&t=320504.

You can try to prepare USB installation key with a different program and instal LMDE4 again.

Finally I installed Debian, inspired by this comment https://unix.stackexchange.com/question ... 546_472238 and everything is working now. Instead of preparing the usb with UNetbootin I used dd as suggested by senjoz, I wonder if that was the issue.

Now I added LM repo to my sources and I'm looking for ways to make the appearance and software look like the real thing, because I enjoyed my brief but intense experience with the live usb. I'm using these links as references:

viewtopic.php?p=1747527#p1747527
https://github.com/linuxmint/mint-dev-t ... m.manifest

So, in a way, I can mark this as solved.

I'm thankful for all your advices, senjoz, jwiz and karlchen, and my family who supported me in this whole affair. Without your help, I would have never managed to make it to this point. Your mothers should be pride of you. And I hope you do well in the future. Remember that this is not the end, just the beginning. See you.

Oddly I've had mostly failure results prepping a usb drive to install any linux distro from withing any linux distro, but from within any Windows version using Unetbootin to prep a Linux distro installation thumb drive = always succeeded. I don't get it *shrugs* either.

Congratulations!
Would creating the LMDE 4 live system using the same dd commandline, writing the LMDE 4 ISO file to the pendrive instead of the Debian ISO file, not work as well?
This might give you
the real thing
i.e. LMDE 4.

Maybe you are right, but I'm just too tired and old to restart again. Apart from the repo/theme/default packages, are there any real difference between debian and LMDE?
