LMDE 5 Elsie / no bootable image found

Post by boq7 »

I just completely removed my OS and installed LMDE 5 Elsie Cinnamon on my hard disk.

Installation was done successfully but when I wanted to restart then I got the message that NO BOOTABLE IMAGE WAS FOUND and notebook had to shut down.

My partition has the BOOT flag, so I do not understand. What am I missing?

Fast boot > ENABLED
Secure boot > DISABLED

I believe my notebook runs in LEGACY.

To solve this incident, just go to the bios of the machine by pressing F1 then select UEFI with CSM support, save with F10 then reboot.

Boot on the live usb, open gparted and erase the entire disk and create a new gpt partition table (devices), then add an ext4 partition, apply the changes, continue the installation of lmde5.

UEFI is selected now in BIOS.

My hard disk was already correctly formatted with GPT and ext4 file system, see here

https://freeimage.host/i/SPG9pV

Somehow now the message NO BOOTABLE IMAGE FOUND disappeared but now I get the GRUB command line where I am expected to type something.

Same problem though, my laptop cannot boot in LMDE.

Use the boot repair tool on the Live ISO you used to install LMDE5 with, that should sort it out.

Alternate (again from the live ISO), use efibootmgr to delete the Fedora entry if that is the OS you removed to install LMDE5. The second command instructs the laptop to use LMDE5 as the primary boot option.

Code: Select all

sudo efibootmgr -b0000 -B

Code: Select all

sudo efibootmgr -o 0001
I’ll tell you a DNS joke but be advised, it could take up to 24 hours for everyone to get it.

Did you select in bios csm support and uefi first at boot?

I recommend to restart a correct partitioning like sda1 as /boot/efi, swap, / and /home

That did not work.

Same problem.

But in start up screen I get this now

Code: Select all

GNU GRUB Version 2.04-20

Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB
lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists possible
device or file completions.

Have you attempted full-disk encryption before this LMDE5 installation, Bok7? (Because I haven't :!: )
You are expected to boot into "shell', enter your "paraphrase" and then proceed to normal boot of X. Right?
So did you not even once get close to enter that paraphrase?

Correct, I did not get a chance to enter my pass-phrase.

I just used normal install with automatic partitioning.

I recommend to restart a correct partitioning like sda1 as /boot/efi, swap, / and /home

1. How to encrypt then?
2. I have a 250GB hard disk SSD, how to divide this up for each /boot/efi and swap and / and /home?

Follow this video to make a new partitionning of your sda drive => https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5kh_-6e4kk

Then make a fresh installation, that's all :)

@cpedretti

I appreciate everybodys help for this apparently complicated issue, but as far as I can tell my USB is fine, my BIOS is fine, my hard disk is fine.

And I use a normal standard installation with automatic partitioning.

Why this goes wrong? What is the cause of this?

I can try a dozen different possible solutions but is not more efficient to exactly pinpoint the cause of this issue and target the solution around the cause?

I do not understand what causes this since as I said my whole setup seems fine.

Thank you again for everybody who is helping.

run the boot repair tool from the live ISO in that case. put yes to recommended mode and let it do it's thing. even if you get an error message about writing to NVRAM (EFI) it should work.

Now the whole situation got worse!

The problem here is UEFI, since I aquired some laptops and PC's that comes with it (Not Legacy Boot %100), it has been a real headache for me trying to sorting these issues found on these equipments, let me give you some advice that could help or work for you as it did for me.

LEGACY BOOT: If you have a computer that is only Legacy Boot, or you can disable UEFI completely, you have to use Rufus to write the Linux Mint ISO as CSM/Legacy Boot and format your hard disk or ssd as "MBR" not "GPT", that way I have found I can install LM on these machines (at least in my case).

Partitions layout that worked for me using Legacy Boot:
1) Format Partition Table as "DOS".
2) Create Swap partition.
3) Create / or root partition (Make sure the /root partition has the "Boot" flag enabled.
4) Create the /home partition.
5) Install boot loader on "SDA" on the "MBR" of disk ssd.
Finish install and reboot, this should work!

UEFI: If you have an UEFI equipment, tell Rufus to wrtite the LM ISO as GPT/UEFI and make sure your HDD or SDD is formated as GPT not MBR.

Partitions layout that worked for me using UEFI:
1) Format Partition Table as "GPT".
2) Create a 500-800 MB FAT32 partition (Make sure it has the "ESP/BOOT" flags enabled).
3) Create the Swap partition.
4) Create / or root partition.
5) Create the /home partition.
6) Install boot loader on "SDA" on the disk or ssd.
Finish install and reboot, this should work!

PLEASE READ, IMPORTANT!: This Next step is very important: --->> When you're going to create the LM ISO (or any other whatsoever) to be used with UEFI enabled equipment, use the usb ports on the motherboards, do not use usb hubs or usb extension cards to make the ISO or it will fail, it will Not work with UEFI, again, put the usb flash drive or pendrive directly on the usb ports on the back of your motherboard, or directly on the usb ports of your laptop, again, Do Not Use any kind of external usb devices to create UEFI enabled ISO's, I have tested this and it would not work, until I found out by trial and error (and a LOT of headaches later) that I had to put my flash drive directly on the usb backports of my Mobo, Then finally I was able to install LM on the PC's and Laptops with UEFI enabled!

Please take note that some equipments doesn't like some Flash Drives brands, like Kingston or Sandisk for example, and that some old Mobo's will not work with UEFI Linux ISO's (Only with Windows) even when they come with the option to enable/disable UEFI or Legacy Boot! (I'm looking at you Intel). :(

Well Guys & Gals, I really hope this helps someone, good luck!
