[Solved] 5.10.0.19-amd64 kernel drm_kms_helper boot issues

Post by jbess »

After following the Update Manager to update the kernel from 5.10.0.18-amd64 to 5.10.0.19-amd64, the following reboot slowed to a horrible crawl, constantly displaying these messages:

Code: Select all

[drm:drm_atomic_helper_wait_for_flip_done [drm_kms_helper]] *ERROR* [CRTC:62:crtc-0] flip_done timed out
[drm:drm_atomic_helper_wait_for_dependencies [drm_kms_helper]] *ERROR* [CRTC:62:crtc-0] flip_done timed out
[drm:drm_atomic_helper_wait_for_dependencies [drm_kms_helper]] *ERROR* [PLANE:52:plane-3] flip_done timed out
After 15-20 minutes, it finally finished booting, but left me at a command prompt and not the UI, still occasionally displaying those messages above. I rebooted to my previous kernel and there was no issue booting. There are some older forum posts that suggest editing the GRUB config but that didn't help:

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet video=SVIDEO-1:d"
Reference: viewtopic.php?f=46&t=307950&p=1734154&h ... r#p1734154

I'm looking for some help, but also to let others know of the work-around. From the GRUB boot menu, select Advanced Boot, then choose the previous kernel

inxi -Fxxxrz output:

Code: Select all

Same issue here.
My version of LMDE is also running on AMD Ryzen 7, but I am using a 5700G with Radeon Graphics.
I discarded the faulty kernel following the hints of topic
viewtopic.php?t=375668
as a workaround.

I thought I was the only one. Yes me too. Mine went through the same, ended up on the LM icon in the middle of the screen and stopped responding. Reboot and previous kernel was the only answer.

The PC specs:
DeskMini UM350 Mini PC AMD Ryzen5 3550H Small Desktop pc,DDR4 16GB 512GB SSD Windows 10 Desktop Computer,2500M LAN,Radeon Vega 8 Graphics 4k Triple Display Output Mini compuer, Support Auto Power On

UM350(16+512) SPEC
CPU AMD Ryzen 5 3550H, 4 Cores/8 Threads
GPU Radeon Vega 8 Graphics (Graphics Frequency 1200 MHz)
Base Clock/MAX.Boost Clock 2.1GHz/3.7GHz
Default TDP 35W
RAM DDR4 16GB (8GB×2 , SODIMM Slots×2)
Storage M.2 2280 512GB PCIe SSD( up to 2TB)
Storage Expansion 1x 2.5 inch SATA HDD Slot (SATA 3.0 6.0Gb/s)
Wireless Connectivity IEEE 802.11ac Dual Band WiFi , Bluetooth
Ethernet 2500Mbps LAN
Video Output HDMI (4K@60Hz),DisplayPort(4K@60Hz) , USB-C Port(4K@60Hz)
Audio Output HDMI , DisplayPort , 3.5mm Audio Jack
Power DC 19V ( US adapter included)

I have screen shots but even the 2.3MB file is 'too large'. What...

I'm going to un-install the 5.10.0-19-amd64 kernel...

Me as well. There's a bug in the 5.10.149 update that crashes machines on boot-up using AMD Ryzen APU's (integrated graphics). Ironic given the amount of security bugs resolved in this update but hey ho.
Bug has already been reported to the Debian kernel team https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo ... ug=1022042

Hi.

I just encountered a similar issue on my Tuxedo w/debian-5.10.19-amd64. So I flipped over the kernel documentation. Another possible workaround might be setting 'nomodeset' as a kernel parameter. This at least works for me for the moment. Still investigating this issue...

Welcome to the forum, tsc.

Unless you have very, very old hardware, your use of 'nomodeset' is preventing your graphics drivers from loading and working properly. Your system is likely running in software rendering mode.

Phew... I thought my nephews wrecked my HDD or something
Same here on a mini PC ASUS PN51 with Ryzen 5 APU 5300U
My LMDE boots up straight to tty
I will just downgrade the kernel and wait for a fix.. I do use the graphical environment sometimes

Let me add what I did temporarily until the fix will pop up.
I've booted to kernel 5.10.0-18 and then removed the problematic kernel with:

Code: Select all

sudo apt remove linux-image-5.10.0-19-amd64 linux-headers-5.10.0-19-amd64 linux-headers-5.10.0-19-common
After that I wanted to put current kernel on hold with:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-mark hold linux-image-5.10.0-18-amd64 linux-headers-5.10.0-18-common
So I won't forget and upgrade again by mistake :S

When the fix goes live I'll revert the hold with:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-mark unhold linux-image-5.10.0-18-amd64 linux-headers-5.10.0-18-common
And upgrade to said fixed kernel.

And this morning there's a 5.10.149-2 kernel. Anyone tried it yet? Bit gun shy after the last one.

I haven't tried it yet, but after reading the latest entries in this, i'm still hesitant. https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo ... ug=1022042
Note though that the latest points are for users with AMD GPU's as well (causing conflict between radeon and amdgpu drivers), so i'll be hunting to see if users with just Ryzen APU's are still affected.

So here's the package tracker for the 149-2 update https://tracker.debian.org/news/1377322 ... -security/
The two closures mentioned confirm other users saying this now works. So I bit the bullet and went for it. However, upon updating and restarting, i'm still on the previous version as the update didn't include all required packages? (Missing linux-image).

I just upgraded to the advertised 5.10.149-2 and had no issues on booting up. Think I'll mark this as solved. Thanks all for confirming I wasn't crazy and thanks to the devs that fixed the issue quickly.

That seems to have happened to me as well. I removed the misbehaving kernel with the first command listed above, did not put on hold, then ran apt update and saw that 149-2 was available (and listed as upgradable from 149-1). Did a full-upgrade and now I still only have 5.10.0.17 and 18 in the grub list.

I think I'll just wait for the next kernel update and see if that installs well.

I decided to go into Synaptic Package Manager and installed "linux-headers-5.10.0-19-amd64" and "linux-image-5.10.0-19-amd64". That did the trick. Restarted multiple times, no issues. Why they were missing in the first place? No idea.

I've been trying, my display (using Radeon XT 6700) defaults to LapTop Mode and the second monitor is not recognized. I've tried many suggestion from various forums but eventually rolled back to 5.10.149-1. It's only been out a week, so I haven't seen anyone else report the same problem yet. Maybe it's just me, who knows. I'll wait til -3 comes around and revisit it then.

That's an indication the graphics drivers are not loaded. Check your inxi -Gxx output to determine that (and compare it to your output with kernel 5.10.149-1).

The OP has marked this topic solved so I suggest creating a new topic for your issue because it is possible there is a different underlying issue in your situation.
