<SOLVED> PC freezes randomly with LMDE5

Post by headroom010 »

Hi everybody,

my PC freezes randomly with the new installed LMDE5.
With LMDE4 i didn't had that problem.

I can often work with the PC for a while as long as I don't start too many programs or watch videos.
But it doesn't seems to be an memory-issue. There is enough free memory and i checked the memory with a memory-test-program from an Gparted-Live-CD.
The programs i start can be a terminal or a text-editor. The PC then freezes in the moment of the launch.

When it freezes i can sometimes, when i am fast enough, restart with

I have already researched a lot in this forum and found the tip in this post
viewtopic.php?p=2175072#p2175072
to issue the following command after the freeze and reboot

Code: Select all

journalctl -rb -1 | nc termbin.com 9999
Here is the url that the command has given back:

driver: nouveau
Nouveau is problematic. And nvidia proprietary legacy 340 drives are not available for 5.10 and newer kernels cause nvidia dropped their support.
There is a workaround on Debian systems which involves installing a 340 driver package from sid repos. It's not a very good idea and half the time it does not work.

Install main-branch Mint 20.3 supported till 2025 which includes legacy 340 drivers.
Or Mint 21 and use this PPA at your own risk.

With LMDE4 i didn't had that problem.
Welcome to the forum, headroom010.

I reviewed the log and I do not see any messages of problems near the end. It appears power was removed from the computer to stop it.

The only two items I noticed in the log was an error message related to hibernation which likely means it is not working properly

Code: Select all

Nov 01 17:24:45 kernel: PM: Image not found (code -22)
and there seem to be problems with one of the drives you attach to the computer. The below is a sample of the messages related to it.

Code: Select all

Nov 01 17:34:47 kernel: FAT-fs (sde1): Volume was not properly unmounted. Some data may be corrupt. Please run fsck.
Nov 01 17:34:47 udisksd[785]: Mounted /dev/sde1 at /media/internet/TREKSTOR on behalf of uid 1002

Your GPU is not overheating, is it? I did notice the GPU temp is quite a bit higher than the CPU temp.

Code: Select all

Sensors:
  System Temperatures: cpu: 31.0 C mobo: N/A gpu: nouveau temp: 53.0 C
  Fan Speeds (RPM): N/A
If this is the correct page ASRock 770 Extreme3: BIOS, it appears the last BIOS, version 1.90, was for "Modify install AMD OverDrive utility, resume from S3, system hang issue."

Machine:
Type: Desktop Mobo: ASRock model: 770 Extreme3 serial: <filter>
BIOS: American Megatrends v: P1.80 date: 10/18/2010

I do not know if their terminology for a hang might be what you are experiencing when you say the system freezes. I also do not know if all three items are related. Resuming from S3 is resuming from suspend/sleep.

...
Thanks for the suggestion, MiZoG.
However, I had no problems with Nouveau on LMDE4. So why now?
Because of the new Kernel?

Thank you very much, SMG. Nice to be here.

Yes, if I can't restart the computer quickly via SUB, it hangs completely. I had to restart it via reset.

Yes, suspend is not working. When I wake up the computer, I get a colorfully troubled screen.
It looks something like when I play videos with the celluloid video player. That doesn't work yet, although I installed the non-free codec package.
However, I can easily open, cut and play the same videos with the Avidemux per appImage.
I can also watch videos in the browser, but here the computer can sometimes freeze.

This is a USB stick that was connected when the computer froze.

No, I don't think so. But I'll keep an eye on them and take a look at the gpu fan.

I find that very interesting. As I said, the suspend is not working properly.
Maybe I should try it out first. I will report.

But I just started the computer, registered, started KeePass and the browser and the computer is frozen.
How does that fit gpu or suspend problems now?

That message happens when you hibernate the computer. It means the computer can not properly save the image of everything on which you have been working. If it can not save it properly, then, of course, it can not resume properly.

This message is not related to video. If I recall correctly, it means your swap space (where the image is saved) is not set up correctly.

I did some research and came to the conclusion that it is more likely to be the old graphics card, as MiZoG said.
I then tried to install the Nvidia driver as described in this guide.
https://www.if-not-true-then-false.com/ ... idia-guide
Unfortunately without success. It stops with an error when building a kernel-module with dkms.
Than I tried to install the patched Nvidia driver as described here.
https://www.if-not-true-then-false.com/ ... a-patcher/
It can be installed without an error message, but the system then no longer starts a graphical user interface.
So far I have not been able to find out why.

If I look into the resources in system monitoring, 8GiB swap are connected there.
It can still be set up incorrectly?

In order to use the swap space for hibernation, the information telling the system to use swap must be set up properly in the grub file for the system to be able to save the hibernation information to the swap file and then for the system to be able to get the hibernation information out of the swap file when your system comes out of hibernation.

If you read How to enable hibernation with swap partition on Linux Mint 19, you will see under 1b it describes setting up resume with the UUID of your swap partition. From what I have found in the past, the error message you are getting relates to some type of problem with that resume variable information.

I managed to find an old AMD graphics card that has similar values to my old Nvidia.
And lo and behold, the problem with freezing has been solved.
