LMDE5 Cinnamon Live CD Installer Crashes

Post by Titan91 »

When proceeding past the below prompt the live CD installer closes with no errors. I downloaded the 64-bit ISO from linuxmint.com via torrent and used unetbootin to set up the 8GB USB drive in ISO mode. I then properly unmounted the drive before physically unplugging it. Chosen language is English United States and America Chicago for time zone. Keyboard model detected as Generic 105-key PC (intl.). Using a normal USB keyboard and mouse. The 8GB eMMC system drive appears as a 7GB SD card at /dev/mmcblk0. Choosing LVM or not makes no difference. I'm using an 8GB USB flash drive. I downloaded the 64-bit ISO via torrent from linuxmint.com and formatted the USB drive with unetbootin using the ISO option. There were no issues during this process. Secure boot is off and legacy BIOS is off. BIOS/firmware is up to date. I'm also aware some PipeWire and PulseAudio stuff isn't working.

I verified the checksum of the ISO matches:

Code: Select all

sha256sum -b lmde-5-cinnamon-64bit.iso

Output from System Info app:

Output from dmesg (full 128kb buffer, only about 57kb of data):

You tried to install a debian-based distro with a usb stick burned with UNETbootin?! :x
UNETbootin could in fact be a very different application today from what it used to be
but I don't recall other app so much loathed and disparaged in Debian community than Unetbootin. It couldn't handle hybrid images at all those days.
Joking aside, try just in case something else. Rufus on Windows, default USB image writer on Mint or equivalent utility on other distro
that merely uses -dd to write an image into a thumpdrive.

I know a few years ago I tried LMDE3 with Unetbootin and it worked without these issues, so I went back to doing that. I checked the download page and FAQ page and they don't give specific instructions how what USB writing tool to use.

https://www.linuxmint.com/download_lmde.php

And recent threads like this are just as vague stating "Once the ISO file is downloaded then burn it into the USB stick and make it bootable":

https://www.linuxbuzz.com/install-linux ... tion-lmde/

Maybe that was causing the errors I was seeing regarding filesystem not being unmounted properly, don't know. Since you said "All joking aside" I'm assuming I wasn't magically expected to know this. Following your advice I restored the image using the Gnome Disks utility on Linux Mint Ubuntu-based and I'll try booting and installing LMDE5 again.

Thanks.

I tried again using a USB drive formatted with the Gnome Disks utility using the restore image option. Unfortunately I'm still getting the same issue:

Why is the installer showing 4MB for the total size and a different device name? I explicitly selected the 8GB eMMC drive, mmcblk0.

I found this thread:

https://superuser.com/questions/1039508 ... -onto-emmc

And would like someone to verify this comment is accurate:

"First of all "/dev/mmcblk0boot0", "/dev/mmcblk0boot1", and "/dev/mmcblk0rpmb" should not be touched at all. If you aren't doing anything to it but it's the distro installer, then basically it has a bug.
