Thunderbird upgrade to v. 102

Post by rxpcdoc »

Tuesday's (09/27/22) upgrade from Thunderbird 91 to 102 killed downloading to all POP3 accounts. IMAP accounts continued to work. The error message said there either was not enough disk space or that I didn't have permission to write to the mailbox, neither of which is true.

Starting in Safe Mode didn't help. Searching yielded a known bug related to this, but 102.3 was supposed to fix it. It did not. In this instance a data backup and the 91.x installation file from another system saved me. Thunderbird 91.x is now held to prevent an upgrade until this is fixed. In the interim, I've got a copy of the 91.x installation file saved somewhere other than /var/cache/apt/archives.

Usually the first question would be, which version of Mint, but in this we can skip it. There does not exist an update for TB 102, not for Mint 20.x and not for 21. So you must have added another repository, which now creates a problem for you.

Hello, rxpcdoc.

I know that my experience will not help you solve any issues with updating T.B. from 91.13.0 to 102.2.2 or to 102.3.0 even.
My TB 91.13.0 was updated to 102.2.2 only a few days ago (20-Sep-2022) by the Mint Update Manager.
My TB 102.2.2 fetches mails from my e-mail providers via POP3 without any problems and sends them out via SMTP without problems. No bugfixing steps had to be done here after TB had been updated to 102.2.2.

By the way, my Thunderbird still uses the (old-fashioned) mbox format to store my mails, i.e. 1 file per folder.

Regards,
Karl

It does exist for LMDE5 so it's possible they just posted in the wrong forum section

antikythera and Cosmo,

Yes, it is LMDE5, and no other Thunderbird repositories are in play here. I should have known better; it seems like something breaks every time there is one of the 10+ major version upgrades.

I guess I should go to the Mozilla bugzilla and add a +1 to the aforementioned bug.

I am surprised because of the post by karlchen. After reading, that he got 102 one week ago  I checked again, refreshed the update manager, in LM 21 I even switched back to the main server, but whatever I do, no 102 in sight.

Is there perhaps the mozillateam ppa in the game?

EDIT: written before the posts after antykithera, which I saw only after I submitted this. And still astonished because of the post by karlchen.

Sorry, in case I had known before that you used LMDE 5, I would not have mentioned TB 102.2.2 on Ubuntu based LM 19.3. I am aware that Ubuntu Launchpad PPA's are not meant to be used on LMDE.

@karlchen: Did you get TB 102 on Mint 19.3 or not? I'm loosing the overview.

karlchen,

Correct, no PPA's involved either. The official LMDE5 repositories are as shown below. The upgrade would have come from one of them. It's not in the bullseye repository, so that leaves the "elsie" repository.

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com elsie main upstream import backport #id:linuxmint_main

deb https://deb.debian.org/debian bullseye main contrib non-free
deb https://deb.debian.org/debian bullseye-updates main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org bullseye-security main contrib non-free

deb https://deb.debian.org/debian bullseye-backports main contrib non-free

debian stable-security (bullseye) is the provider for this package

There is no Thunderbird at all inside: http://packages.linuxmint.com/list.php?release=elsie

Thanks antikythera. I've never learned how to search the security repositories.

Found it in Synaptic Package Manager. Search for the thunderbird package, right click it and choose properties. Then look at the versions tab ;)

you can use karlchen's command too though LC_ALL=C apt-cache policy thunderbird

Code: Select all

michael@ms-7c52:~$ LC_ALL=C apt-cache policy thunderbird
thunderbird:
  Installed: 1:102.3.0-1~deb11u1
  Candidate: 1:102.3.0-1~deb11u1
  Version table:
 *** 1:102.3.0-1~deb11u1 500
        500 http://security.debian.org bullseye-security/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     1:91.13.0-1~deb11u1 500
        500 http://mirror.vorboss.net/debian bullseye/main amd64 Packages

I doubt I would have found that. Synaptic is not the default package manager in LMDE, and I would not have known to look for it. Starting by building text-only Debian servers, I've developed a preference for the command line, but have not previously had a need to look at apt-cache. apt-get and apt-mark are about as far as I've gone.

Thanks for the tutorial. :)

I know it's not the default but I refuse to use Software Manager and prefer Synaptic or just plain apt

So kind of old school too I guess
