LMDE3 - Install Complete MATE Desktop

Post by rbeltz48 »

For anyone interested in using the MATE desktop over Cinnamon. The complete MATE desktop does not install through Synaptic since many of the components are missing because it was released only with the complete Cinnamon desktop. Go to a Terminal and run the following commands:

apt install mate-desktop-environment-core

apt install atril desktop-base engrampa eom ffmpegthumbnailer fonts-droid-fallback galculator gnome-user-guide libaacs0 libcanberra-gtk3-module libgphoto2-l10n libsasl2-modules mate-applets mate-icon-theme-faenza mate-media mate-notification-daemon mate-power-manager mate-screensaver mate-system-monitor mate-user-guide mate-utils menu murrine-themes pluma python-cryptography python-idna python-ipaddress python-openssl va-driver-all

It worked for me. I hope it works for you if you prefer MATE over Cinnamon as I do.

We'll likely hear more about MATE options as part of the instructions for upgrading LMDE 2 to LMDE 3 (after the final release is done).

I asked for help at Github and thought that the missing components was a bug in LMDE3. Clem passed on those commands. Normally MATE desktop will install with Synaptic with virtually any Ubuntu based distro. I have done it with many of them and it has worked well. Debian always seems to throw a curve at you! Thanks.

are you able to set preferences to the Mate apps rather than the Xapps? I was not having any luck...

I will be doing a fresh install of LMDE3 as soon as the Beta period is over.

I would like to end up not just with the Mate desktop but with a Mint Mate desktop, I'm not bothered about it being the latest version the version used with LMDE2 would suit fine.

The LMDE3 MATE version is 1.16 whereas LMDE2 MATE is at 1.18.

Isn't a newer MATE version in Debian backports?

not in Debian backports,.. but Debian Buster uses Mate 1.20. Note that Buster is Testing, and that can be a bit unstable. I use Buster Mate on a couple "non critical" machines. Actually it is pretty good these days.

The mess created by the Level 1 Update introducing 1.18 into LMDE 2 (May 1, 2017) made it very clear that stability of the LMDE series was a low priority. Many of us moved on.
I have faith that LMDE3 will be better.

I think you're mistaken as Stretch backports has MATE 1.20.

Instructions for adding Stretch backports can be found here: https://backports.debian.org/Instructions/.
Somebody should try this with a LMDE 3 test install :)

Thanks, I had not looked for a while. I like some of the new 1.20 app features.
I will check it out soon

I ran MATE on Debian Stretch for quite awhile with no issues. I believe backports had it up to 1.18 and then as xenopeek mentioned, more recently they moved 1.20 into backports. Never had any issues with MATE on Debian. I used Cinnamon on Buster for a shorter period of time, but it too was problem free. So LMDE should be quite solid, so far it has worked well, only the default installer has been problematic.

The problem with Debian MATE or any version of Debian is the updating process. Nowhere as refined as Mint. I tried Debian MATE on two occasions and kept coming back to Mint MATE, and now LMDE3 beta with MATE and Wine installed. Running really well so far! But still too early to tell the whole story. Idles at about 580-600 MB.

I have LMDE 3 running in Virtualbox. It is very nicely behaved (which for many Cinnamon desktop distro's is not the case). I've added the Stretch backports and upgraded the kernel and installed MATE. it runs perfectly. I used synaptic for the kernel en aptitude for MATE (as I noticed several MATE 1.16 components were already installed) and no issues. Pretty impressed so far.

try pk-update-icon
probably in your Mint repos
It throws up a Icon in your panel when it detects updates.

I much prefer Synaptic, personal choice.

Thanks again.
I did a bit more reading in the wikis and went with Stable Proposed Updates instead. https://wiki.debian.org/StableProposedUpdates
I had to flip my distribution preferences in Synaptic, but it was simple... once I discovered I was missing that important step.

Update got me hundreds of packages, and it took maybe 1 hour download (the slow part with my speeds) and install time.
Nice, no glitches yet... but it has only been a few days. Time will tell.
(Now it is my daily driver... I cloned my primary system and will save the cloned partitions for a few weeks)

PS: I have not tried it on LMDE yet, maybe I will later today.

Done and it was seamless! I'll test it out and try and get a guide up if the dev team doesn't mention anything about how to install MATE when the final Cindy release is out.

Hi Fred. I still have in mind your great tutorial to get rid of deb multimedia repo in LMDE2. Maybe you will update it to fit LMDE3 ?

Dearly.
