Where is Mate ?

Post by zaileion » Tue Aug 28, 2018 12:10 pm

Why is there no Mate GUI for LMDE 3!!??   :?: :!:

Sorry folks, but I don't like Cinnamon.
The only reason I use Mint is because of Mate...

I am certain there are thousands of Mate users out there that are terribly unhappy with the fact that there is no LMDE 3 Mate!!

Allow me to express my deep deep dissatisfaction with the fact that there is no Mate Desktop Environment available for LMDE 3.

How can I D/L LMDE 2 Mate?

You need to install it.

Code: Select all

apt install mate-desktop-environment mate-applets mate-system-monitor mate-utils

what additional packages do I need to include to get all the things? All things Mate?! isn't there "extras" or something?

I have read discussions indicating upgrade paths after LMDE3 is out of beta.
Seems reasonable that there would be an upgrade path for LMDE2 MATE as well.

Am running LMDE 3 now, using MATE 1.20.3. Just install LMDE 3, add the stretch-backports and update. I used

Code: Select all

aptitude install -t stretch-backports mate-desktop-environment
and done. You end up with a distro with a newer Cinnamon than Debian 9 + backports can offer, and a MATE that is newer than LMDE 2.

How can I D/L LMDE 2 Mate?
Find a local (to you) mirror and D/L it directly... MIRRORS

Example. Click the example and then click whichever ISO you want... it will D/L. If you use a mirror closer to you, you will probably get faster D/L speeds...

I've installed LMDE3 that I found on a US mirror...

Cinnamon is running in software rendering mode = high CPU.

The reason for that is the SIS graphics in my old laptop, it was expected.

I need to install Mate, not want to need to so as to resolve the problem.

How do I go about this while retaining the Mint appearance ?

Can I download the Mate desktop plus Mint-Meta-Debian-Mate as used in LMDE2 ?

I'm not bothered about latest versions I just want a Mint looking version of Mate.

You should be able to install it from Synaptic.

For a full Mate installation, you can install meta-package mate-desktop-environment-extras.

If you want latest Mate 1.20, add stretch backports and then:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install -t stretch-backports mate-desktop-environment-extras
Then, it's easy to restore mint appearance with mint-x ou mint-y themes and icons in mate control center.

Thanks for that. I was considering adding the LMDE2 repository to the hosts file then installing Mate and Mint-Meta-Debian-Mate from there but may as well have the latest Mate while putting in the effort.

It hadn't occurred to me to restore the Mint look through appearance in control centre.

Adding LMDE2 repository is not a good idea. It may conflict and break your system.

IMO, the best way to do is to install LMDE3, add Debian Stretch backports, and install Mate from here.

This all seems like beating a dead horse.

I have tried to get the Mate meta package (mate-desktop-environment-extras) using the instructions on the Mate website: http://wiki.mate-desktop.org/download
I have been unsuccessful with that method. It seems that LMDE 3 uses some form of Apt Preferences (https://wiki.debian.org/AptPreferences) that I have not yet been able to figure out.

For those that have only used Mate with Mint... there is a huge difference, many small tools missing.
The enhancements in Mate 1.20 are nice but the "extras" in the meta package are much more important to me.

Perhaps the final release of LMDE 3 will be different still. I will wait to do more with it.

other issue that I was unable to work around: Xapps. I want the apps that are bundled with Mate. Yes, I can install all of them, but I have been unable to get them set in the preferences... the darn Xapps keep getting used.
I suppose the best option would be to figure out how to quickly purge all of them and the Cinnamon packages also.
--- after all of that bother I wonder ... Why not just learn to love Cinnamon? (not gonna happen ;-) )

Rumor has it that LMDE3 is getting propagated in the mirrors...so maybe we will have the final later this week, or even today!

good day all... enjoy!

PS: I don't like using back-ports, there is a loss of stability that I want to avoid... especially if it is on someone else's computer .... My wife would pitch a fit if I did that to her.

I did a clean install on to a hard drive. Before doing any software updates, I installed most of the Mate packages in the repository then I removed all of the Cinnamon packages. Then I rebooted and Mate seems to working. Then I did a software update. Every thing seems to be working

Isn't MATE 1.18 in the debian backports? Not sure if backports would be an issue in LMDE 3 or not.

Mate 1.20 is in Debian Stretch backports. LMDE3 is Stretch-based, so there should not be trouble to use backports.

I installed Mate from Stretch backports which gave me version 1.20 but without audio integration.

I did a fresh install of LMDE3 as the install was new.

I then used these instructions that I found elsewhere in these forums:

apt install mate-desktop-environment-core

apt install atril desktop-base engrampa eom ffmpegthumbnailer fonts-droid-fallback galculator gnome-user-guide libaacs0 libcanberra-gtk3-module libgphoto2-l10n libsasl2-modules mate-applets mate-icon-theme-faenza mate-media mate-notification-daemon mate-power-manager mate-screensaver mate-system-monitor mate-user-guide mate-utils menu murrine-themes pluma python-cryptography python-idna python-ipaddress python-openssl va-driver-all

This gave me a fully functional install of Mate 1.16

well done, it works!
I am even able to select default apps in preferences other than the Xapps...maybe they will stick. I hope.

I will run it for a few days and report back
*add mate-tweak to your list

PS: some right click options are not enabled, notably "open as admin". I forget which package does that.

thanks. an astute friend suggested caja-gksu and that did the trick.
I will have a look at caja-admin ... I don't recall that one
