[SOLVED] Thunderbird 60 has no Calendar

Post by supertallrich » Wed Sep 19, 2018 3:15 pm

From what I've read it's supposed to come with it, but I can't figure out for the life of me how to activate it.

This article was of no help: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/ca ... hunderbird

The Lightning version on the Mozilla extensions site is not compatible with v60.

Is there a way to get old Thunderbird 52 back?

Currently using the Linux Mint sanctioned Thunderbird 52.9.1. with Lightning 5.4.

Following a download and extract of Thunderbird 60, I found that my existing Lightning was now attached to Thunderbird 60 but declared as incompatible with 52.9.1.
My opinion of Thunderbird 60 is that with its squared tabs it is now as visually displeasing as Firefox 62 and it was therefore removed from my system.

To restore Lightning to Thunderbird 52.9.1, I selected "Remove" Lightning in Extensions, restarted Thunderbird and typed Lightning into the search bar (in Extensions) and selected "install" when Lightning was presented as an option.

Now I can use Thunderbird 52.9.1 with Lightning again. No data was lost during these processes.

Thunderbird 60.1, when it is released, will be the updatable version after testing by the Linux Mint Team but not version 60.

Well version 60 is what I got from the repos with a fresh install of LMDE3. I purged it and downloaded 52.9.1 and I am a happy camper again.

Thanks,

The TB60 version on my Debian9 system has no problems with the lightning extension (Lightning 6.2). Is the TB version of Ubuntu/Mint so different in comparison to the Debian package?

Reminderfox is a really nice calendar add-on for Thunderbird.

Means: TB60 was not tested by the Linux Mint Team?

an surprising amount of stuff is Not Tested by the Mint.Team as it comes from upstream,
that is, from either Ubuntu OR Debian and any testing would be done at that level.

I understand, so the upstream for TB60 was an Ubuntu package because there is the same problem: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1084059 ... ar-missing

Thunderbird surely comes from upstream (Debian Stretch repos in this case).

Code: Select all

$ LC_ALL=C apt policy thunderbird
thunderbird:
  Installed: 1:60.0-3~deb9u1
  Candidate: 1:60.0-3~deb9u1
  Version table:
 *** 1:60.0-3~deb9u1 500
        500 http://security.debian.org stretch/updates/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

ingredients from the same warehouse, different cooks. some things just don't get properly mixed.
"upstream" is a cop-out.

I see Debian has a slightly different package, if that matters

Lightning is so important to me, as important as my email. I am lost without my calendar of upcoming events. I will have to go back to 52.9.1 somehow. I can't wait days to have a compatible version.

See if you can add Lightning from your software manager or synaptic... it is actually a separate app.
Or Download a different version of Third from the Thunderbird website...

Anyone thinking of downgrading Third to get round this might want to think again.

Saw this in another topic (works great):

- Install the new version of Thunderbird
- then: sudo apt install xul-ext-lightning
- then: start Thunderbird and remove the Lightning add-on
- then: close Thunderbird and restart

That's a worst case scenario here for me. I didn't notice lightning has gone until I wanted to add a new appointment. I could miss appointments this way very easily. Are the old appointments still available with the solution above?

Is there an alternative for lightning? I tend to replace it with a real program instead of an addon.

Thanks
kaie

After much messing around (....why ?....) I discovered a fix here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1229874

If you scroll down to the help for people with the Linux version you will find this line
sudo apt install xul-ext-lightning

....which is very similar, but not quite the same, as reported by Hendrick.

I performed this and the sidebar reappeared, and so did my Calendar. If your does not you may have to try Ctrl+Shift+C.
The sidebar is called the "today pane", toggle the display of this pane with the F11 key.
