How to update kernel when Update manager won't

Post by nlgootee » Tue Mar 12, 2019 3:57 pm

I have lmde3 "Cindy" installed as a dual boot with LM19.1 and Cindy has been very stable so far, but the Update Manager has quit working. I get a "unable to get exclusive lock" message with the suggestion that I close the application that is causing the problem. Can someone please tell me how to discover which application is causing the problem?

A reboot might be easier and quicker. You might have Synaptic or the Software Manager open and that causes the issue

easier and quicker than what? I have done all of the obvious things including uninstalling and reinstalling the Update Manager. If there is another package manager open somewhere it isn't visible. I was hoping for some command line magic that would expose the culprit and turn it off.

you can always use apt to install updates. the most popular option would be to use apt-get. If you're interested, open a terminal window and enter "man apt-get" to display the manual.
