Firefox ESR is updated being in LMDE repositories. You can't replace it without disrupting upgrade process. Simply don't use it, install another browser and made it the default browser. You can download directly the official ready-to-use Firefox binary from https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/
The latest version CAN BE FOUND here

Code: Select all

http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/latest/README.txt
for eg US English

Code: Select all

https://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-latest&os=linux64&lang=en-US
Uncompress the archive in the /opt directory as root or in your home directory for current user

Code: Select all

sudo tar -xvjf firefox-78.0.2.tar.bz2 -C /opt
Create a firefox.desktop launcher as root in the /usr/share/applications or in the in the ~/.local/share/applications for current user

Code: Select all

[Desktop Entry]
Name=Firefox
Comment=Web Browser
Exec=/opt/firefox/firefox %u
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Icon=/opt/firefox/browser/chrome/icons/default/default128.png
Categories=Network;WebBrowser;
MimeType=text/html;text/xml;application/xhtml+xml;application/xml;application/vnd.mozilla.xul+xml;application/rss+xml;application/rdf+xml;image/gif;image/jpeg;image/png;x-scheme-handler/http;x-scheme-handler/https;
StartupNotify=true
Replace in the above /opt/firefox path if using installation in the Home.
Create a symlink

Code: Select all

sudo ln -s /opt/firefox/firefox /usr/local/bin/firefox
To run it as default, you can change alternatives

Code: Select all

sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/x-www-browser x-www-browser /opt/firefox/firefox 200 && sudo update-alternatives --set x-www-browser /opt/firefox/firefox

Technically you can remove it but as said it is not recommended.

Another option to install the regular version of Firefox is using the flatpak version. When you open the software center it should offer you both versions of Firefox and you can choose the Flathub version.
