[SOLVED] Authentication needed to run .../csd-backlight-helper as super user

Post by Dan_Gerous »

Running LMDE4 on an older Thinkpad, just updated a pile of things via update manager. This message just popped up this morning as I tried to adjust screen backlight. Full message: Authentication need to run '/user/lib/x86_64-linux-snu/cinnamon-settings-daemon/csd-backlight-helper' as the super user

The window has a "Details" option that takes me to a dead web page, but a search comes up with https://www.freedesktop.org/software/po ... ority.html

Closing the window (cancel) allows the backlight to adjust, so I'm a bit confused as to why something now needs SU rights to make an adjustment that previously worked as a given, and still works without authentication?

Seeing as the backlight adjustment keys were working even though the message kept coming up on screen for each step of adjustment, I figured something was duplicated, that the cinnamon settings daemon had overlaid over the base function of whatever was compiled in the kernel (or function call), I tried renaming the csd-backlight-helper file and rebooting. Problem "solved".

I managed to rename the file, but the controls simply stop working if I do so. Renaming it back to the original name gets me back to the square 1...
This started as I upgraded to the v20.2
Any suggestions?
