Is it possible to get Mate 1.26 on LMDE5?
any advanced folks here know how to get Mate 1.26 on LMDE5? Not sure it's possible without potentially breaking a lot of stuff, but figure there's gotta be a way to safely bring the Mate 1.26 stack in through the testing repos?

Personally, I would leave LDME5 alone, since I love debian. But, the choice is yours.
Below is some info, as you are on your own.
First & foremost, create a Timeshift backup!
LMDE3 to LMDE4 Upgrade - Can I stay with MATE?

You can keep both or delete one of them.
To install Mate:
sudo apt install mate-desktop-environment -y
To purge cinnamon, create a Timeshift backup to prevent fails or data loss then:
sudo apt autoremove --purge cinnamon nemo cinnamon-screensaver cinnamon-control-center -y
After reboot you'll see just Mate as default desktop environment.

Good luck.

Oh, I already got the MATE desktop on LMDE 5 -- no issues there. Debian Stable only has MATE 1.24 though and so I was looking to bring in 1.26. Doesn't sound like it would be a good idea though so just going to leave it as-is. Thanks!

I would wait for the upgrade to 1.26.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Have fun.

On debian 11 Mate 1.26 is only available in sid sources.
Also available in Linux Mint 20.3 backports.
Will probably be native in the next version of linux mint which will be based on Ubuntu 22.04.
You will have to wait for debian 12 to have version 1.26.
