Switch from LM 18.2 to LMDE: Power consumption raised by 50 %
I re-partioned my SSD and switched from LM 18.2 to LMDE 4. The battery life decreased drastically even with an empty desktop. Both installations are standard installations. The hardware did not change. The backlight has the same setting.
The CPU is AMD PRO A10-8700B R6 (10 Compute Cores 4C+6G × 2). It is an Elitebook 745 G3. I tried all suggestions from powertop, but they don't make a significant difference.
I don't understand this huge difference in power consumption.
Thanks for any idea!

Hi,
Did you ever solve this? I am considering converting a 745 G3 to from Windows to Mint. Did the webcam and wlan work properly with 18.2? What was the battery life with 18.2?
Thanks, Mat

Hi MatNieuw,Did you ever solve this?
I doubt that you will get any reply from "tcp" as he did a "one and done" posting of this on Mar 24, 2020...This is the only post he ever made here in the forums and never returned...DAMIEN

Don't select 18.2, which is almost dead (end of update support in a couple of months). Select Mint 20, which is the latest and the greatest.

To add to this topic - powertop alone would not have been sufficient to curb power consumption, they would also have needed to install and configure tlp properly for their hardware. Then they could have matched or exceeded the battery life they had on Mint 18.2
I’ll tell you a DNS joke but be advised, it could take up to 24 hours for everyone to get it.

Yes, I got the things solved (especially the energy comsumption) with a newer kernel. Everything is working well on 745 G3 and LMDE. Even with the old 18.2 all hardware was working.
Cheers
PS.: You receive an answer from tcp but I'm sometimes a bit slow.

Not sure if Mint 20 is the latest and greatest. I'm running 19.3 on a Ryzen 3200G desktop, and when I tried Mint 20 via USB boot I got corrupted graphics and could not continue. Because I didn't have a spare partition to do a trial install, I left it. Maybe 20.1 will be better.

Ah, apparently an XFCE issue, "staircase graphics". Initially I had the same issue with 20.1, but a forum tip gave the workaround.MatNieuw wrote: ⤴Wed Dec 16, 2020 2:26 pmNot sure if Mint 20 is the latest and greatest.
