[Solved] LMDE 4 Dell Optimus Graphic Card Cinnamon Fallback Mode

Post by rprebollo »

I had an old and good dell latitude e6420 laptop. I have recently installed lmd4. My old nvidia card has no support with nvidia 418 or 430 drivers provided on install OS options. I had to make normal install and then install nvidia 390 currently .132. If i disable optimus from bios setting nvidia card is used but if i enable cinnamon crash and run on fallback mode. Here is some info i think could be usefull.

Re: LMDE 4 Dell Optimus Graphic Card Cinnamon Fallback Mode

Post by roblm »

I have been working with the OP through Private Messages but there appears to be a limit to the total message size, so I have added the info here.

After doing some testing on my Optimus laptop with LMDE 4, I found out that the Nvidia-390 driver is not configured exactly the same as the 418 and 440 drivers. The 418 driver is the default driver installed when you use the command apt install nvidia-driver and the newest 440 driver is from the Buster backports. With the 418 and 440 drivers, there is no fallback mode after the driver is installed, but there is fallback mode after the 390 driver is installed. This is bad if you want to switch back to using the Intel GPU. These steps were used to solve all the problems.

Use this command to create an xorg.conf file: sudo touch /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Open the file for editing: xed admin:///etc/X11/xorg.conf

Add these lines:

Code: Select all

Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "layout"
    Screen 0 "nvidia"
    Inactive "intel"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Driver "nvidia"
    BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Device "nvidia"
    Option "AllowEmptyInitialConfiguration"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "intel"
    Driver "modesetting"
    BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "intel"
    Device "intel"
EndSection
Open the File Manager. Right click in the empty space and select Create New Document > Empty Document. Name it .nvidia (The dot makes it a hidden file). Open the file and add these lines:

Code: Select all

xrandr --setprovideroutputsource modesetting NVIDIA-0
xrandr --auto

Close the file. Right click on it and select Properties > Permissions. Mark the checkbox next to Allow executing file as program.

Use this command to open the 70-linuxmint.conf file:
xed admin:///etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/70-linuxmint.conf

Add this line: display-setup-script=/home/your-user-name/.nvidia, changing your-user-name to your actual user name.

Reboot and the Nvidia GPU should be doing the graphics rendering.

The main Mint editions are based on Ubuntu and use the nvidia-prime program to switch GPUs but LMDE 4, which is based on Debian, can’t use that program. The switching must be done manually. To switch back to the Intel GPU for graphics rendering, you must use one or two commands to prevent the Nvidia driver from loading, depending on what driver version is installed. This disables the xorg.conf and nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf files by renaming them. This is followed by logging out and back in or rebooting. Both of these commands are needed for the Nvidia-390 driver. Only the first one is needed for the 418 and 440 drivers.

Code: Select all

sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.old
sudo mv /etc/nvidia/legacy-390xx/nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf /etc/nvidia/legacy-390xx/nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf.old
To switch back to the Nvidia GPU for graphics rendering, those two file changes are reversed:

Code: Select all

sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf.old /etc/X11/xorg.conf
sudo mv /etc/nvidia/legacy-390xx/nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf.old /etc/nvidia/legacy-390xx/nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf

************************************

rprebollo,
This is the remaining info that I was unable to send as a Private Message. Would you test the script below and report if it works correctly. Use the command inxi -G to check if the GPU has changed.

To make the GPU switching easier, a desktop script can be used. Right click on the desktop and select Create New Document > Empty Document. Name it Switch GPU. Open the file and add these lines:

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh

if [ $(ls /etc/X11/ | grep xorg.conf) = "xorg.conf" ]; then
   gvfs-set-attribute $HOME/Desktop/Switch\ GPU -t string metadata::custom-icon file://$HOME/Pictures/Intel-logo.svg
   sudo mv /etc/nvidia/legacy-390xx/nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf /etc/nvidia/legacy-390xx/nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf.old
   sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.old; reboot

elif [ $(ls /etc/X11/ | grep xorg.conf) = "xorg.conf.old" ]; then
   gvfs-set-attribute $HOME/Desktop/Switch\ GPU -t string metadata::custom-icon file://$HOME/Pictures/Nvidia-logo.svg
   sudo mv /etc/nvidia/legacy-390xx/nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf.old /etc/nvidia/legacy-390xx/nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf
   sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf.old /etc/X11/xorg.conf; reboot
fi
Save the file and close it. Right click on it and select Properties > Permissions. Mark the checkbox next to Allow executing file as program. When you click on the desktop script, choose the option Run in Terminal.
After typing your password, the GPU that is currently selected will be switched, followed by a reboot.

Also, the main Mint editions use the nvidia-prime applet that is added to the system tray and it’s icon will show what GPU is selected. For LMDE 4, a similar function is added to the script. It’s icon will be changed to show what GPU is selected. It will look like one of the two icons below:

Switch GPU Intel+Nvidia.png
Switch GPU Intel+Nvidia.png (10.93 KiB) Viewed 1556 times

For this feature to work, download the switch-gpu.zip file below, which contains the Nvidia-logo.svg and Intel-logo.svg icons. Right click on it and select Extract Here. Move the icons to the Pictures folder.

switch-gpu.zip
(13.42 KiB) Downloaded 43 times

If the icon is not changed, then check in /etc/X11/. Only xorg.conf or xorg.conf.old should be listed.
There should not be any other file with xorg.conf in it, such as xorg.conf.backup.

Use this simpler desktop script if the Nvdiia-418 and 440 drivers are installed:

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh

if [ $(ls /etc/X11/ | grep xorg.conf) = "xorg.conf" ]; then
   gvfs-set-attribute $HOME/Desktop/Switch\ GPU -t string metadata::custom-icon file://$HOME/Pictures/Intel-logo.svg
   sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.old; reboot

elif [ $(ls /etc/X11/ | grep xorg.conf) = "xorg.conf.old" ]; then
   gvfs-set-attribute $HOME/Desktop/Switch\ GPU -t string metadata::custom-icon file://$HOME/Pictures/Nvidia-logo.svg
   sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf.old /etc/X11/xorg.conf; reboot
fi

Thanks man, everything was just right as you instruct me. Thank you, thank you. Thanks to you i can now use the full power of my laptop. By the way i was having troubles resuming from hibernation (use swapfile) and as soon the nvidia problem was solved that its working 100% too. I think must change subject to "[SOLVED]" no??? By the way, and that is topic for another post, i know, why is boot time so slow once nvidia drivers installed. Nvidia support just sucks???

Open your first post and click the Edit post icon. In the Subject window add [Solved] in front of the topic name.

How much slower is the boot time with the Nvidia GPU enabled?

Try this easy method first. Open the xorg.conf file: xed admin:///etc/X11/xorg.conf

Add this X Config line to the first Device section: Option "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP-0"

So the section will now look like this:

Code: Select all

Section "Device"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Driver "nvidia"
    BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
    Option "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP-0"
EndSection
Reboot and check the boot time.

I know this is an old laptop but before the nvidia drivers installation booted in 40 secs or so (autologin on) now this is my situation (by the way even if i switch to intel gpu boot time just sucks).

this is before xorg changes you sugested in latest post:

Code: Select all

 systemd-analyze
Startup finished in 11.323s (kernel) + 1min 51.486s (userspace) = 2min 2.810s
graphical.target reached after 1min 51.474s in userspace
Now am gonna make the changes you suggested.

Now with xorg changes:

Code: Select all

systemd-analyze
Startup finished in 7.847s (kernel) + 1min 38.225s (userspace) = 1min 46.073s
graphical.target reached after 1min 38.206s in userspace
Still sucks but is a progress.
Mint logo is there about 30 secs but when get to the autologin part i got a blank screen for one minute or more, then the cursor and finally cinnamon desktop.

Seems to be docker but i have been there before, disable docker and the it will be another, i think the root cause is nvidia related because before drivers installation everything was in normal range.

You can test that by not removing the Nvidia driver. First switch to the Intel GPU.

Open the 70-linuxmint.conf file: xed admin:///etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/70-linuxmint.conf

Add a pound sign (#) in front of the line you previously added, to disable it, so it will now look like this:
# display-setup-script=/home/your-user-name/.nvidia

Use this command to create a blacklist-nvidia.conf file:
sudo touch /lib/modprobe.d/blacklist-nvidia.conf

Open the file for editing: xed admin:///lib/modprobe.d/blacklist-nvidia.conf

Add these lines:

Code: Select all

blacklist nvidia
blacklist nvidia-drm
blacklist nvidia-modeset
alias nvidia off
alias nvidia-drm off
alias nvidia-modeset off
Now the Nvidia driver module and in addition, the 3 Nvidia kernel modules won’t load.

Reboot and check the boot time.

Wow, this is gonna sound very rare indeed: I can't switch to intel GPU now. I double and triple checked.
First let me explain what i mean by "can't switch to intel gpu". System starts normal boot process after execute your script, then appears never reach graphical.target. I remove splash on boot to see what is happening. It ends normal boot, blinking cursor (underscore) is there. There is some disk activity according to laptop led and in some point no more disk activity blinking cursor and nothing happens. Using nvidia when system arrive to blinking cursor then make a switch, i think to graphical.target and continues to auto login ...

What i have tried:
Undo last change about
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP-0"
.
Execute switch script instructions directly on terminal to see if something came out.
Double and triple check proper move of xorg.conf .outputclass.
Reboot and reboot and reboot.
Undo call to .nvidia script from lightdm settings.

So far nothing bring me to Intel GPU.

Waiting your reply.

Calm down. False alarm. Optimus was disabled on my bios setting. I have no idea how that happened. I got the clue from an inxi report show me only nvidia GPU. But make some discovering in the process.

I have wrongly placed
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP-0"
in xorg.conf. I put it inside "Server Layout session". But when i put it where you instruct me i get my desktop background after autologin but not desktop. There is no panels, no icons, windows key doesn't bring menu ... I manage to call a terminal with alt+f2 and remove troubling setting from xorg.conf and reboot. Another thing: in your script for gpu switching this command

Code: Select all

gvfs-set-attribute
through this warnig:

Code: Select all

This tool has been deprecated, use 'gio set' instead.
See 'gio help set' for more info.
Although it does the job.

And finally, i have changed

Code: Select all

reboot
by

Code: Select all

systemctl reboot -i
also in the switching GPU script. Something about not capable or make reboot for sshd logged that i could only see when execute code on terminal because nothing was happening clicking on the script on my desktop.

Now am gone try modprobing nvidia drivers for the slow boot problem.

You shout my mouth. After blacklist nvidia drivers boot time still sucks. Then proceeded to mask systemd services: docker, nm-wait-online, disable persistent logs lvm2-monitor.service. After that boot time experiments no significant improve. Then disable auto mounting of ntfs partition. This is an hdd. Now my boot time is:

Code: Select all

Startup finished in 7.620s (kernel) + 21.586s (userspace) = 29.206s
graphical.target reached after 21.574s in userspace
It is not a solution but at least i know the root of my problem, i need one sdd, dont you think??

That’s very strange how the Optimus setting got changed in the BIOS.

That command only switches the script’s icon. You can ignore that message and continue to use it without any adverse effect. At the worst, it won’t work. I’ve used other deprecated (made obsolete) commands before and continue to use some now. Also, there is no gio command that Mint uses or any gio package from the repositories, except for a gio-sharp, and when you try to install it, the message says Unable to locate package gio-sharp

Also, the reboot command is not deprecated.

I have an SSD in my laptop and all 3 of my newer main PCs.

You previously said the boot time was only slow after installing the Nvidia driver. Do you have a Timeshift restore point to use before the Nvidia driver was installed? Or you could remove the Nvidia driver to retest the boot time. It’s not that time consuming to redo everything.

Here is my output for comparison:

Code: Select all

systemd-analyze	(Nvidia driver installed)
Startup finished in 4.232s (firmware) + 8.279s (loader) + 5.461s (kernel) + 8.030s (userspace) = 26.003s
graphical.target reached after 6.753s in userspace

Code: Select all

systemd-analyze	(No Nvidia driver)
Startup finished in 3.408s (firmware) + 5.449s (loader) + 5.588s (kernel) + 21.214s (userspace) = 35.660s
graphical.target reached after 21.207s in userspace
Locked
