I moved to Linux two months ago from a lifetime on Windows. Never went past 7. When it came time to go to 10, I came here instead, thanks!
My first computer had to be run from DOS, so I'm no stranger to the terminal and I welcome it back. This beast still has all it's drives with all it's old OSs, so my Linux installs are on a separate SSD. Motherboard has Intel on board but I'm not using it. It has two Nvidia GeForce GT640. GPU-0 has the LG at 1980x1050 as DVI-I-1 and the other is a Viewsonic VA2012w on as DVI-I-1-1 on GPU-1 The Viewsonic is dark but works in Win 7. Fiddling around, I found the EDID for it and put it on a edid.alien.txt file in /HOME. Nvidia XServer settings GUI can't activate the screen because it attempts to write a xorg.conf inside the /ETC/X11/ folder which does not exist in LMDE. It did create one for me which I inserted using

Code: Select all

sudo xed /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
.
This is it:

Code: Select all

I restarted and came back to a desktop in emergency mode (love it) Where I removed the file created at /ETC/X11/ and went back to a normal boot. Read that LMDE did away with the Xorg.conf file but I found the empty folder and the warning not to use them.
During the crash, I noticed I was able to move my cursor through the black screen though :D I guess that's progress of sorts...

But at this point, I'm ready for help.

Other things that may help sort this out:
My attempt to insert the EDID

Thanks for moving me to the LMDE section with this.
Here's the Xorg log, it knows the Viewsonic is there but won't turn it on. I'm learning Xorg now.

Just to let you know, your data indicates it is enabled.

Graphics:
Device-1: Intel Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics
vendor: ASUSTeK driver: i915 v: kernel bus ID: 00:02.0 chip ID: 8086:0412

v: 460.91.03 bus ID: 01:00.0 chip ID: 10de:0fc1 class ID: 0300
Device-3: NVIDIA GK107 [GeForce GT 640] vendor: eVga.com. driver: nvidia
v: 460.91.03 bus ID: 02:00.0 chip ID: 10de:0fc1 class ID: 0300
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.11 driver: loaded: modesetting,nvidia
unloaded: fbdev, nouveau, vesa alternate: nv resolution: 1920x1080~60Hz
s-dpi: 96
OpenGL: renderer: GeForce GT 640/PCIe/SSE2 v: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 460.91.03

Have you checked the output of xrandr --verbose to see what is being picked up (or not picked up) by the system from the ViewSonic?
Adolphus wrote: Tue May 17, 2022 6:55 pmHere's the Xorg log, it knows the Viewsonic is there but won't turn it on.
I do not see where the graphic driver recognizes the EDID. It says EDID, but there is no EDID listed.

Code: Select all

[ 12.838] (WW) NVIDIA(G0): Cannot find size of first mode for ViewSonic VA2012wSERIES
[ 12.838] (WW) NVIDIA(G0): (DFP-0); cannot compute DPI from ViewSonic VA2012wSERIES
[ 12.838] (WW) NVIDIA(G0): (DFP-0)'s EDID.
Just to let you know, this indicates the Intel is enabled. However, the inxi output indicates Nvidia is the primary renderer.

Code: Select all

Thank you so much for your reply SMG.
I had noticed it's active and recognized but won't turn on. If I boot into Windows, it's there.
Here's the output you suggested:

Unfortunately, I'm only good enough to be dangerous as I still have no formal training in Linux and I'm relying on search and deduce as always.
I've changed the cables, plugged in from it's VGA port to DVI with an Adapter as well. Also, I should mention I have tried it on the onboard DVI as well with the same results. Always works on the Win side but not here. This Viewsonic, came with a CD which was recommended to be installed. I still have it after over a decade, but it's windows only.

I've not been able to add the EDID to the Xorg.conf. I'm still mystified where that configuration is stored in this version. My attempt to add a configuration file landed me in support mode. It was easy to remove the file. I got the EDID through the NVidia GUI.
Thanks again!

How do I get that EDID in there safely?

PDD Per advice on #Linuxmint-help, I disabled onboard graphics and rebooted. Just before desktop, after login, LMDE gave a black screen with displeasure regarding bios. After that normal boot. No luck with Viewsonic.

Where did you see this information indicating which monitor was on DVI-I-1 and DVI-I-1-1?

Did you try (if it is possible) having both monitors on the same GPU?

I do not know the specifics for LMDE5 for using a custom EDID.

Thank you for your time!

Since all I have to do is reboot into any windows partition and it works, I've discarded trouble with any of the hardware components. This monitor required the CD to be installed before you could switch it off from 640x480 when I first got it. LMDE5 Xorg.conf management is a well kept secret lol.

Obviously, LMDE5 is creating and using a Xorg.conf file somewhere. My theory is that it lacks the mechanism to grab the EDID from the monitor firmware.

That is not a good assumption on your part. The difference could be Windows "filling in the blanks" with regards to EDID info which is not coming through the cable. Generally speaking, Linux-based distros seem to be more "strict" and if the data isn't exactly what it is expecting then it will not fill in with a best guess of what it might be. Based on feedback I've seen, it seems Windows does do make a best guess and fill in missing information.

What was installed? Drivers?

I am familiar with using xorg.conf on Ubuntu-based Mint. Debian has made recent changes in how Nvidia drivers are handled and I'm not familiar enough with it to know how it differs from Ubuntu-based Mint.

Thanks for your reply SMG!

Thanks for reminding me of the differences and nuances moving away from Windows. I appreciate it.

The CD installed a driver, I'm guessing detailing it's information.

I've made some progress finding out how LMDE5 treats the Xorg.conf file. Basically the same way for us. Behind the scenes, it appears to be automatic, but they left a folder for us to use if needed. I've made this snippet .conf file in there and rebooted well. Screen is still off. I'm attaching my conf file and my new Xorg log for you to see. There's a point where it balks about not being able to set the size of first mode:

Code: Select all

12.832] (WW) NVIDIA(G0): Cannot find size of first mode for ViewSonic VA2012wSERIES
[ 12.832] (WW) NVIDIA(G0): (DFP-0); cannot compute DPI from ViewSonic VA2012wSERIES
[ 12.832] (WW) NVIDIA(G0): (DFP-0)'s EDID.
I've added the edid, I've added a monitor, I've moved setting around like a madman and I'm still dark but always booting back up. That counts. I'm also having a blast.

Snippet .conf file:

Code: Select all

Section "Monitor"
    # HorizSync source: edid, VertRefresh source: edid
    Identifier "Monitor1"
    VendorName "Unknown"
    ModelName "ViewSonic VA2012wSERIES"
    HorizSync 30.0 - 94.0
    VertRefresh 50.0 - 75.0
    Option "DPMS"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen1"
    Device "Device1"
    Monitor "Monitor1"
    DefaultDepth 24
    Option "Stereo" "0"
    Option "SLI" "Off"
    Option "metamodes" "nvidia-auto-select +0+0"
    Option "BaseMosaic" "off"
    SubSection "Display"
         Depth 24
    EndSubSection
EndSection

I do not know the details for your monitor, but some CDs installed a program that permitted one to change settings for the monitor but do not install a driver. Others actually do install a driver. However, I would hope, given the age of the monitor, the open-source community would be able to get it to work.

Is this the monitor VA2012w, a 1680 x 1050 with a VGA port?
Adolphus wrote: Thu May 19, 2022 6:45 pm There's a point where it balks about not being able to set the size of first mode:

Code: Select all

[ 12.832] (WW) NVIDIA(G0): (DFP-0); cannot compute DPI from ViewSonic VA2012wSERIES
[ 12.832] (WW) NVIDIA(G0): (DFP-0)'s EDID.
I did not catch this earlier, but these lines are actually a continuation of the same sentence. The message is "Cannot find size of first mode for ViewSonic VA2012wSERIES; cannot compute DPI from ViewSonic VA2012wSERIES's EDID."

To me, that seems to indicate that there might be an issue with the EDID.

The following line indicates a default is used.

Code: Select all

[    12.832] (==) NVIDIA(G0): DPI set to (75, 75); computed from built-in default
In this topic [SOLVED]How shall i force EDID onto nvidia propietary driver the monitor was showing up in xrandr output. I do not know why yours is not and I think that may be part of the issue. (I helped that person on the topic which preceded that topic. We got it working with nouveau using kernel parameters.) Maybe something from that topic will help you.
Adolphus wrote: Thu May 19, 2022 6:45 pmSnippet .conf file:
Do you have both monitors specified in the file? I only see one mentioned.

Code: Select all

[     8.612] (**) |-->Screen "Screen1" (0)
[     8.612] (**) |   |-->Monitor "Monitor1"
At least the Viewsonic is showing as connected in this Xorg log.

Code: Select all

[ 12.825] (--) NVIDIA(GPU-1): ViewSonic VA2012wSERIES (DFP-0): connected
Although it appears it is also showing up for the Intel driver.

Code: Select all

[ 12.913] (II) modeset(G1): Output VGA-2-1 using monitor section Monitor1
If you are not planning on using the onboard graphics, I suggest you disable/turn off them in your computer's BIOS/UEFI. Usually, there is a setting to do that. That will remove all the Intel-related lines in the log.

That's the important part. :)

I didn't add a monitor line for the working monitor because it's working :D

Earlier I disabled it and got some angry lines regarding the bios right after login screen but it booted well. I turned it back because the message was consistent every boot and because it did not momentarily help. I will try again now. I'll keep trying...

Not all motherboards are set up the same way with regards to handling onboard and discrete graphics. If you are running into issue, just leave it on. I do not know the specifics of your motherboard.

Good morning.
Still no monitor. Tried several configurations. Portions, full. Most I get is a cursor in a dark screen, unable to move a window over to it. Booted to LM20 Ubuntu and the screen works!
So it's Debian. I'll post a support request with them. I'm ready to uninstall the Nvidia drivers and use the Debian versions of Nouveau. Later I will grab a xorg.log from the LM Ubuntu installation and see if I can make a coorelation.
Thanks again for your time and help. It's not a crucial issue. Just work with one screen for a while.

Update: Solved.

LMDE5 will not produce a working, automatic Xserver configuration with two identical GT640 GPUs with a monitor on each, nor will it accept any configuration file to remedy it.
Always and in every single case, the monitor connected to the second logical pci slot will not turn on. Not only that. It will show a logo on startup on that screen and then completely disable it as if it didn't exist. Any screen I put on it.
The only way to work with this BUG is to plug both monitors into the same video card. Almost made me go back to LM Ubuntu. almost.
I don't know where to report a bug of if the Debian/Xorg teams even care. Nothing to do with the monitor being old, the EDID, whether onboard graphics was disabled or not. The results were always the same.
Thank you SMG for your help. It was priceless and I had fun. Well to a point.
I feel defeated but vindicated. I tried everything at my level and learned a ton!

It works on Ubuntu-based LM but does not on Debian-based LM?

I am not sure where that would fall in the bug-reporting realm because I would think it is possible there is a component to this issue which relates to the Nvidia driver and how the operating system files interact with it. That means there could be a possibility the root cause of the issue could be due to a factor in the closed source driver.

Re: Disabled screen in dual Nvidia Cards + Intel Onboard GPU [SOLVED] it's a BUG

Post by Adolphus »

Hi SMG, Sorry, my well pump had to be replaced. No sudo there, I'm afraid :(
All good now.

Yes, it works fine in every file system I have on this machine, except on LMDE5. Win 7, 8, 10, 11, Ubuntu LM, Manjaro, Peppermint, heck, even POP OS.

That was the reasoning for the "BUG" declaration lol.
I went to their main irc and had some help there. Mainly it consisted on uninstalling NVidia drivers and installing Noveau. I was given the option to install NVidia drivers after the installation in the software manager, so I did. I've been hesitant to make the changes and for now, I got both monitors connected to the same GPU. Somehow, it sees both GPU's during early startup and shows logo on both. Then there's a click, to me it seems the second GPU is being disabled for the desktop because it doesn't show up in ARandR. Between the LMDE5 Team and teh NVidia team, they may be missing something but again, my system is not the newest either.
So as far as [SOLVED] goes, I still consider it a bug. Something that should've worked from the start as it did in other distros, but it don't.

Thanks again!!

Peppermint OS is based on Debian Bullseye just like LMDE5. :?

I have no guesses as to what might be different. I would presume it's using the same Nvidia drivers as LMDE5.

Hi there,

I will boot peppermint and double check what drivers it's using. I can't remember if I left it as it installed or if I installed the Nvidia drivers. I did not use it very long because I ran into LM and I liked it better. Peppermint is really fast though. I probably didn't stay long enough to get to know it.

Thanks for your reply,
